Shakespeare Decoupage Coffee Table

Table revamped with pages from an old copy of 'Hamlet'

About

I decided my coffee table was far too boring, and I had two old copies of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' from when I was in 6th form, so I put the two together :)

It did take a while, but most of that was drying time in between coats of glue and varnish. The actual pasting pages took about 3 hours.

You Will Need (5 things)

  • Paint Brush
  • Book Or Magazine Of Your Choice
  • Piece Of Furniture Of Your Choice
  • PVA Glue
  • Clear Varnish

Steps (4 steps, 3000 minutes)

  1. 1

Take one boring table and sand it.

I got bored of sanding because my table is made of that cheapy plastic-y wood, which was very difficult to sand,
but the paper stuck to it anyways.

  2. 2

Take your pages, and arrange them over the table in a way you like.

Mix PVA glue with water (50% of each).
Then begin pasting the pages one by one on to the table. Smooth out the pages as you go to get rid of air bubbles.

  3. 3

When the whole table is covered leave to dry.

Once dry, paste another coat of the PVA mix over the entire table. Leave to dry.
Repeat two or three more times.

  4. 4

Once the glue is dry, paint on a coat of varnish. Leave to dry for a few hours (or however long it says on the tin), do several more coats this way, until you are happy with the finish. I have so far done about 6 coats, and still really need to do some more, but I'll leave that for another day.

    et voilá!
