This shawl is perfect for those who love garter stitch and want something simple but just complex enough to keep you interested. The contrasting vertical stripes add interest and the simple garter stitch lace border gives it a nice touch of lace without being too fussy. The shawl can be worked in two shapes: a long slender slightly curved shawlette and a triangular shawl. Directions for both are included. Also the border can be knit as you go or added on later. check out my blog for how to add the border later. then you won't be juggling so many balls of yarn! Materials 370yds (250 yds for triangular shawl) light fingering weight yarn (main color) 200yds light fingering weight yarn (contrasting color) US 6 (4.0mm) 16 circ (or longer) needle Tapestry needle Gauge (doesn’t need to be exact) 26sts x 33 r = 4inches in garter st

Instructions

  1. Directions for curved shawlette CO 11sts with main color (MC). Work in garter stitch throughout. You will be working with 3 balls of yarn throughout this pattern. You will need two balls of the main color and one of the contrasting color. The second ball of the main color is to work the garter stitch lace border. The border directions are written in bold. They can be added later if you do not want to juggle 3 balls of yarn. Simply knit the first st and the last st together with one of the main body sts for each row.

  2. Set up pattern Row 1 (RS)(MC) : k1, m1L, pm, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, yo 2x, k2tog, k1 Row 2 (WS) : k3, p1, k2, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, k2 Row 3 (CC): k2, sl m, switch to MC, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, yo 2x, k2tog, k1 Row 4 : (MC) k3, p1, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to CC, k to end From here on out you are going to want to work with 2 balls of the main color: one for the body and one for the border (LBB). Then continue even (do NOT do the m1L’s) for 5 repeats of the pat- tern. From here on out switch the m1L’s to k2tog. Continue with this change until there are 11sts left. BO loosely. Weave in ends. Block to measurements.

  3. Directions for triangular shawl Follow the exact same directions as the curved shawlette adding a m1L on every right side row. Repeat 8 row repeat a total of 27 times. Then immediately start k2tog decreases in place of the m1L on every right side row until 11sts remain. BO loosely. Weave in ends. And block to measurements.
