lots of striped garter stitch with a pretty garter lace border
This shawl is perfect for those who love garter stitch and want something simple but just complex enough to keep you
interested.

The contrasting vertical stripes add interest and the simple garter stitch lace border gives it a nice touch of lace without being too fussy.

The shawl can be worked in two shapes: a long slender slightly curved shawlette and a triangular shawl. Directions for both are included. Also the border can be knit as you go or added on later.

check out my blog for how to add the border later. then you won't be juggling so many balls of yarn!

You Will Need

  • Step 1

    Directions for curved shawlette
CO 11sts with main color (MC).
Work in garter stitch throughout. You will be working with 3 balls of yarn throughout this pattern. You will need two balls of the main color and one of the contrasting color. The second ball of the main color is to work the garter stitch lace border. The border directions are written in bold. They can be added later if you do not want to juggle 3 balls of yarn. Simply knit the first st and the last st together with one of the main body sts for each row.

  • Step 2

    Set up pattern
    Row 1 (RS)(MC) : k1, m1L, pm, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, yo 2x, k2tog, k1 Row 2 (WS) : k3, p1, k2, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, k2
    Row 3 (CC): k2, sl m, switch to MC, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, yo 2x, k2tog, k1
    Row 4 : (MC) k3, p1, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to CC, k to end
From here on out you are going to want to work with 2 balls of the main color: one for the body and one for the border (LBB).
    Row 5 (MC): k to m, m1L, sl m, switch to main color border ball (LBB), k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k2, yo 2x, k2tog, k1
    Row 6 : k3, p1, k4, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to main body ball, k to end
Row 7 (CC): k to m, sl m, switch to main color border ball (LLB), k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k6
Row 8 : BO3, k4 (not including st on right needle from the BO), (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to CC, k to end
    Row 9 (RS) (MC) : k to m, m1L, sl m, (LBB) k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, yo 2x, k2tog, k1
    Row 10 (WS) : k3, p1, k2, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to MC, k to end
    Row 11 (CC) : k to m, sl m, (LBB) k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, yo 2x, k2tog, k1
    Row 12 : k3, p1, k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to CC, k to end
    Row 13 (MC): k to m, m1L, sl m, (LBB), k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k2, yo 2x, k2tog, k1
    Row 14 : k3, p1, k4, (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to main body ball, k to end
Row 15 (CC) : k to m, sl m, switch to main color border ball (LLB), k3, (yo, k2tog)2x, k6
Row 16 :BO3, k4 (not including st on right needle from the BO), (yo, k2tog)2x, k1, sl m, switch to CC, k to end
Repeat these 8 rows a total of 26 times.
Then continue even (do NOT do the m1L’s) for 5 repeats of the pat- tern.
From here on out switch the m1L’s to k2tog. Continue with this change until there are 11sts left.
    BO loosely.
    Weave in ends.
    Block to measurements.

  • Step 3

    Directions for triangular shawl
Follow the exact same directions as the curved shawlette adding a m1L on every right side row.
Repeat 8 row repeat a total of 27 times.
Then immediately start k2tog decreases in place of the m1L on
every right side row until 11sts remain.
    BO loosely.
Weave in ends. And block to measurements.
