School Cardigans
This is a very simple cardigan pattern which can be used for school or home. Make it your own by adding stripes or incorporating pictures by using the intarsia method.

    CREW NECK VERSION
    BACK
    **Using 3.25mm needles cast on 65 [71, 77, 83, 89] sts.
    Row 1: K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
    Row 2: P1, *K1, P1, rep from * to end.
    Rep the last 2 rows until rib measures 4 [5, 5, 5, 6] cm, ending with row 2 inc 1 st at centre of last row. 66 [72, 78, 84, 90] sts.
    Change to 4mm needles and starting with a K row, work in st st until Back measures 18 [22, 25, 29, 31] cm, ending with a ws row.

    Shape Raglans
    Castoff3stsatbegofnext2 rows. 60 [66, 72, 78, 84] sts.
    Row 1: K2, skpo, K to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
    Row 2: Purl.
    Row 3: Knit.
    Row 4: Purl. Reprows1to4,3[1,1,0,1]times
    more. 52 [62, 68, 78, 80] sts.
    Now rep rows 1 and 2 only until 24 [24, 26, 28, 30] sts rem, ending with row 2 of Raglan Shaping.** Leave rem sts on a spare needle.

  • Step 2

    LEFT FRONT

    **Using 3.25mm needles cast on 28 [32, 34, 38, 40] sts.
    Row 1: *K1, P1, rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
    Row 2: *K1, P1, rep from * to end. Rep the last 2 rows until rib measures 4 [5, 5, 5, 6] cm, ending withrow2inc1[0,1,0,1]stat centre of last row. 29 [32, 35, 38, 41] sts.
    Change to 4mm needles and starting with a K row, work in st st until Left Front matches Back to start of Raglan Shaping, ending with a ws row.

  • Step 3

    Shape Raglans
    Cast off 3 sts at beg of next row. 26 [29, 32, 35, 38] sts.
    Work 1 row.
    Row 1: K2, skpo, K to end.
    Row 2: Purl. Row 3: Knit. Row 4: Purl.**
    Reprows1to4,3[1,1,0,1]times more. [27, 30, 34. 36] sts.

    Now rep rows 1 and 2 only until 14 [14, 17, 18, 20] sts rem, ending with row 2 of Raglan Shaping.

  • Step 4

    Shape Neck
    Next row: K2, skpo, K8 [8, 10, 10, 11], turn and slip rem 2 [2, 3, 4, 5] sts on a safety-pin.
    Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows, at the same time dec 1 st as before at raglan edge on every alt row until 5 [5, 7, 7, 8] sts rem. Work 1 row.
    Dec 1 st as before at raglan edge only on next and every alt row until 4 sts rem. Work 1 row.
    Next row: K2, skpo. 3 sts. Next row: Purl.
    Next row: K1, skpo. 2 sts. Next row: Purl.
    Next row: skpo and fasten off.

    Change to 4mm needles and starting with a K row, work to match Left Front, reversing shaping, working an extra row before shaping raglan and working K2tog instead of skpo at raglan shaping.

  • Step 6

    SLEEVES (Both Alike)
    Using 3.25mm needles cast on 35 [37, 39, 41, 43] sts.
    Row 1: K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
    Row 2: P1, *K1, P1, rep from * to end.
    Rep the last 2 rows until rib measures4[5,5,5,6]cm,ending with row 1.

    Incrow:Rib3[3,4,6,4],*m1,rib 5[4,4,3,3],repfrom*tolast2[2, 3, 5, 3] sts, m1, rib to end. 42 [46, 48, 52, 56] sts.

    Change to 4mm needles and starting with a K row, work in st st, shaping sides by inc 1 st at each end of 5th [5th, 7th, 9th, 9th] and every foll 4th [4th, 6th, 8th, 8th] row until there are 54 [50, 60, 72, 66] sts. Then inc 1 st at each end of every foll 6th [6th, 8th, 0, 10th] row until there are 62 [66, 68, 72, 76] sts.

    Work straight until Sleeve measures 23 [27, 31, 35, 39] cm, ending with a ws row.

    Shape Raglans
    Castoff3stsatbegofnext2 rows. 56 [60, 62, 66, 70] sts. Row 1: K2, skpo, K to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
    Row 2: Purl.
    Rep rows 1 and 2 until 18 [22, 18, 22, 18] sts rem, ending with row 2 of Raglan Shaping.
    Next row: K2, skpo, K to last 4 sts, K2tog, K2.
    Next row: P2, P2tog, P to last 4 sts, P2togtbl, P2.
    Rep the last 2 rows until 6 sts rem, ending with a ws row. Leave rem 6 sts on a safety-pin.
    TO MAKE UP
    ***Join raglan, side and sleeve seams.***

  • Step 7

    NECK BORDER
    With rs facing and 3.25mm needles, starting at Right Front, K2 [2, 3, 4, 5] from safety-pin, knit up 12 [12, 16, 16, 18] sts up right side of neck, K6 from right sleeve, 24 [24, 26, 28, 30] from Back inc 1 st at centre, 6 from left sleeve, knit up 12 [12, 16, 16, 18] sts down left side of neck, then K2 [2, 3, 4, 5] from safety-pin. 65 [65, 77, 81, 89] sts.
    Row 1: K1, *P1, K1, rep from * to end.
    Row2:K2,*P1,K1,repfrom*to end.

    Repthelast2rowsfor5[5,5,5, 6] cm, ending with row 1. Cast off loosely in rib.
    Fold Neck Border in half to ws and slip stitch into place neatly.

  • Step 8

    BUTTON BORDER
    Using 3.25mm needles cast on 9 sts.
    Row 1: K2, (P1, K1) 3 times, K1. Row 2: K1, (P1, K1) 4 times.
    Rep these 2 rows until border, when slightly stretched, fits up Left Front for Girl, Right Front for Boy to top of Neck Border, sewing in place as you go along. Cast off in rib.
    Mark position of 5 [5, 6, 6, 7] buttons on Button Border with pins to ensure even spacing, first to come 1cm up from lower edge and the last to come in centre of Neck Border and the remainder evenly spaced between.

  • Step 9

    BUTTONHOLE BORDER
    Work as Button Border with the addition of 5 [5, 6, 6, 7] buttonholes to correspond with pins on Button Border.
    To make a buttonhole - Boy Version: Rib 4, cast off next 2 sts, rib to end and back casting on 2sts over those cast off.
    To make a buttonhole - Girls Version: Rib 3, cast off next 2 sts, rib to end and back casting on 2sts over those cast off.
    Sew on Buttons.

    V NECK VERSION
    BACK
    Work as given for Crew Neck Version from ** to ** noting to cast off rem sts at end of Raglan Shaping at back of neck.

    LEFT FRONT
    Work as given for Crew Neck Version from ** to **.

    Next row: K2, skpo, K to end.
    All Sizes
    Next row: K2, skpo, 1 [1, 1, 1, 0] time, K to last 2 sts, K2tog.
    Work 3 [3, 3, 1, 1] rows, thus ending with a ws row.

    Dec 1 st as before at raglan edge on next and every foll 4th row 2 times, at the same time dec 1 st at front edge on every foll 6th row from previous dec. 18 sts. Work 1 row.

    BORDER
    Using 3.25mm needles cast on 9 sts.
    Row 1: K2, (P1, K1) 3 times, K1. Row 2: K1, (P1, K1) 4 times.
    Rep the last 2 rows until Border, when slightly stretched, fits up Left Front for Girl, Right Front for Boy, to start of front slope shaping, sewing in place as you go.
    Mark position for 4 [4, 5, 5, 6] buttons on Border using pins to ensure even spacing, first to come 1cm up from lower edge, last to come 1cm below start of front slope shaping and the remainder spaced evenly between.
    Cont in rib up left/right front slope, around back neck, down right/left front slope, then down to lower edge, with the addition of 4 [4, 5, 5, 6] buttonholes to correspond with pins on Border, sewing in place as you go along. Cast off in rib.
    To make a buttonhole - Boys Version: Rib 3, cast off next 2 sts, rib to end and back, casting on 2 sts over those cast off.
    To make a buttonhole - Girls Version: Rib 4, cast off next 2 sts, rib to end and back, casting on 2 sts over those cast off.
    Work as Make Up of Crew Neck Version from *** to ***.
