Description

These adorable heart brooches are simple to make and don't take too long. With their bright red and white colour scheme, they make sweet Christmas gifts and stocking-fillers but can be worn all year round (and how about making some as Valentine's gifts for your girlfriends?) You could use any colour combinations to make them!

Instructions

  1. Small p1030699

Find a heart shape online and print out (I Googled 'heart shape') I used a shape about 2 inches high. You could also draw your own. Pin your heart shape to red felt and cut around the template (or draw around your template and cut out). Make two red felt hearts like this.

  2. Small p1030700

With your white embroidery thread and embroidery needle (you need a needle with a large eye for the thick, stranded thread), embroider a kind of star/snowflake shape. Start with a long vertical stitch...

  3. Small p1030701

... then follow with a short horizontal stitch across the top.

  4. Small p1030702

Work round until you have 6 evenly spaced spokes to make your star/snowflake shape.

  5. Small p1030703

Then, add some textured dots by sewing French knots at the top of each spoke. French knots can be a little tricky at first, but this YouTube video Tutorial shows you clearly how to do them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ul8XT72oA68

  6. Small p1030704

Next, put your 2nd heart behind the embroidered one, and start to use your white embroidery thread to blanket stitch the two together, around the edge. Here is a great blanket stitch tutorial, if you need one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXkSE2TTF4s Leave a gap along one of the sides.

  7. Small p1030705

Into the gap, push your puff of stuffing (I used basic polyester toy stuffing), to give a bit of volume to your brooch. Then sew up the gap, putting your final knot just at the back of the brooch so it is not visible.

Finally, sew a brooch back onto the back of your brooch, using a sewing needle and red thread. Then wear or give with pride!
