How to add a scallop hem to a top (or anything else for that matter!)

You Will Need (3 things)

  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • Point Turner

Steps (6 steps, 20 minutes)

  1. 1

If you are using a top that you already have, make sure that it is quite long in the body as adding scallops will shorten the length considerably and make it a crop top. If you are adding scallops to a top that you are sewing, lengthen the hem around 2.5 inches longer than you would otherwise have it.

  2. 2

Serge the hem of the top, then fold up the hem about 2.5 inches so that the right sides are facing and iron down or pin in place.

  3. 3

I drew my scallops free-hand onto the fabric, or you could use an online template or a paper template for a more uniform finish. Place the template at the top of the hem or a little lower, and sketch them onto the fabric.

  4. 4

Carefully sew along the scallops you have drawn. I found that adjusting the stitch length to around 1.8 made it a lot easier.

  5. 5

Trim the seam allowance close to the edge. Then carefully snip at the points between each scallop, making sure you don't cut the thread but getting as close to it as possible.

  6. 6

Flip the hem the right way out and use a knitting needle (or a point turner) to push out the scallop shape. And viola! You're done!
