This stitch is used for the noses of the bear, mole and mouse. Satin stitch can either be horizontal or vertical. The example below shows horizontal stitches, an approach which is ideal for shaping a triangular nose. Use vertical stitches for a round nose.

Description

This stitch is used for the noses of the bear, mole and mouse. Satin stitch can either be horizontal or vertical. The example below shows horizontal stitches, an approach which is ideal for shaping a triangular nose. Use vertical stitches for a round nose.

Instructions

  1. Small 2019 04 02 035025 lfaa027

Thread a 38cm (15in) length of perlé thread onto a darning needle. It is important that you tie only a small single knot on the end. Take the needle into the piece on somewhere hidden from where you are working, and bring it out where you want the satin stitch to be worked.

  2. Small 2019 04 02 035122 lfaa028

Draw the thread through so the knot sits on the surface (see inset), then pull the thread until the knot disappears.

  3. Small 2019 04 02 035106 lfaa029

To avoid damaging the felt, very slightly expand the hole around the knot using the tip of the needle until it can be eased through.

  4. Small 2019 04 02 035143 lfaa030

Take the needle back in on the other side of the area to be worked (a nose, in this case) and out just below where it first emerged.

  5. Small 2019 04 02 035155 lfaa031

Draw the thread through and repeat, working from the right-hand side to the left. Take the needle down above the previous stitch and out just below. Continue working downwards in this way.

  6. Small 2019 04 02 035225 lfaa032

When you reach the bottom of the shape, take the needle down below the previous stitch and out just above.

  7. Small 2019 04 02 035238 lfaa033

This completes the satin stitch shape.

  8. Small 2019 04 02 035246 lfaa034

When used for noses, the spare thread is used to embroider a small mouth as in the inset, and so there is no need to secure it.
