No worries no real sand is required, 'sand' refers to the sandy colour and crumbly texture of these crisp Dutch cookies. I wanted to eat cookies so bad yesterday but it was raining so I took a look at what we had lying around in the cabinets and decided to make these easy to bake cookies. Because I didn't have the usual amount of each ingredients I could only make 10... 10 delicious cookies! optional: you could add precut nuts, dried fruit or small pieces of chocolate to the dough.

No worries no real sand is required, 'sand' refers to the sandy colour and crumbly texture of these crisp Dutch cookies. I wanted to eat cookies so bad yesterday but it was raining so I took a look at what we had lying around in the cabinets and decided to make these easy to bake cookies. Because I didn't have the usual amount of each ingredients I could only make 10... 10 delicious cookies! optional: you could add precut nuts, dried fruit or small pieces of chocolate to the dough.

Instructions

  1. Sieve the flour into a large bowl and add sugar and a pinch of salt. With a spoon mix it and then add the egg. Stirr with spoon. Cut the butter into small pieces and add it to the dry mix. Knead the ingredients with cool hands together until it forms a dough ball (do this quickly) Optional: you can also use a mixer with a dough hook attachment. Add a few drops of milk if the mixture is too crumbly. But the dough ball in a bowl and cover it with plastic. Leave in the fridge for one hour.

  2. Preheat the oven to 175C. Take your dough out of the fridge and roll the dough out on a floured surface, it should be around 0.4" thick (1cm) using a cookie cutter, cut your cutties (and decorate with nuts, sugar or icing if desired) Place the cookies on a greased cookie sheet, brush with egg white and bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool on a wire cooling rack.
