Back in july I posted a project 'Tweedle Collar' as a present for my friend. I recently decided to make a sailor girl version for myself, and a how-to! Hope you like, and please post your version if you give it a go! The tutorial looks quite long, but I've laid it out in more steps to provide you with more pictures and clearer instructions.
Ok so first, gather everything you'll need. Next, you'll need to cut the pattern out of paper. I began by drawing a rectangle, and then freehanded a circle in the middle. Then, with a ruler I drew two lines coming from two corners and meeting in the middle at the circle, like a triangle. Finnaly I cut it out. I then cut the pattern out twice in the white fabric, and once in the interfacing.
Next, iron on the interfacing. If, like me you can't work out which side of the interfacing is the sticky side then sandwich the interfacing bettween the two pieces on fabric and iron. Once the interfacing is firmly attached to one piece of fabric, pin the two pieces of fabric together, ensuring the interfacing is facing outwards.
Now sew the two pieces together, leaving a 1cm seam allowance. Dont forget to leave a 9cm gap on one of the straight lines to turn the bib inside out afterwards.
Once you have sewn completely around the bib (including the center circle, and leaving a 9cm gap) cut small knotches on the seam alowance of the curved edge, and then iron open all of the seam. Now turn the bib right side out, and iron all over.
Now, where you left your gap, tuck the raw edges inside and pin. Then top stitch around the edge of the entire bib, aprox. 0.5cm from the edge. Now, with white thread, sew your snap fasteners onto your bib. Only a small amount of thread should be visable on the front of your bib.
Take a break to remove small dog chasing about dangerously close to your ironing board.
Now, onto the bow. Cut out 2 fat rectanges in the navy fabric, and one in the interfacing. It should be slightly bigger than the size you want the bow. Now iron on the interfacing, and sew all around the edge, leaving a small hole to turn it right side out. Now cut out a longer rectangle, two in navy fabric, one in interfacing.
Iron on the interfacing, then cut off the corners as show in the picture. Now do that same as with the rectangle. Sew around the edges, then turn right side out. Now top stitch both shapes.
Now cut out a small rectangle, and sew down both sides. You should now have three pices, as shown in the photo. Place the pieces as they are in the photo. Squish the rectangle and the other shape together, until it looks like a bow. Sew down.
Now use the small strip to cover the middle, and sew down.
Sew the bow onto the top of one of the corners on your bib with white thread. Straighten it.
and... finnished!
