I knew i wanted to make wings but was a bit uninspired until i saw this picture on tumblr: http://risticeva.tumblr.com/post/10282325337
BAM! INSPIRATION.

It's a little time consuming, but not at all difficult.

  • How to make a jacket / coat. Safety Pin Wings - Step 1
    Step 1

I bought two packs of safety pins from the 99cent store, one pack of 50 large safety pins and a pack of 175 smaller assorted safety pins.

I also had my favourite jacket that i wear everywhere.

    Step 2

Sort the safety pins by size, this is a little time consuming. If you want you can also evenly divide the pins to ensure each "wing" has an equal amount of "feathers".

(It's helpful to find some reference photos of the wings you want to recreate)

Using the smallest size pins, create the upper outline of the wing, pinning following the flow of the feathers.

Add more wins onto this base, increasing the pins in size. General wing anatomy has the feathers growing in size from the lesser coverts to flight feathers on the wings, we're trying to mimic that look.

    Step 5

I fanned the largest pins out along the arms to try and make it look more like an open wing.

Add more of the smaller feathers along the inner end of the wing to add fullness. Keep at it until you're satisfied with your look.

  • Step 7

And you're done! It brings me back to my punk days, lol. All them pins on my back kind of frighten me, sure makes me feel like i'm living on the edge.

Haha thanks! It's not all too hard, kind of like crochet, you can do it while watching two or three episodes of your favourite show.
