Disclaimer: Since I am a strong supporter of modesty, this romper is only meant to be worn in the comfort of your home. I thought the fabric in this thrifted night shirt was pretty. I wanted to do something to it that would be cute and comfy. Since it was a 3x, I decided to make a romper nightie out of it. This was my first romper so I learned a lot in the process. I've even figured out how to make one from scratch. I'll be making a lot of these as it is cute and comfy. If you have any tips on how this how-to could be better send em my way...I'm eager to learn new techniques. What do you think?

Description

Disclaimer: Since I am a strong supporter of modesty, this romper is only meant to be worn in the comfort of your home. I thought the fabric in this thrifted night shirt was pretty. I wanted to do something to it that would be cute and comfy. Since it was a 3x, I decided to make a romper nightie out of it. This was my first romper so I learned a lot in the process. I've even figured out how to make one from scratch. I'll be making a lot of these as it is cute and comfy. If you have any tips on how this how-to could be better send em my way...I'm eager to learn new techniques. What do you think?

Instructions

  1. Small romper 005 1308413325

Let's start with the shorts... -Lay your shirt out flat with the front side facing up. -Fold your shorts in half and place them on top of the shirt. Be sure the bottom of the shorts are aligned with the bottom of the shirt and the crotch is facing the center of the shirt.

  2. Small romper 006 1308413398

-Trace the outline of the shorts onto the shirt. I used a 1/4" seam allowance. Feel free to use whatever size seam allowance you're comfortable with. -Flip the shorts to the opposite side of the shirt and repeat.

  3. Small romper 007 1308414233

-Cut these pieces out -Your pieces should look like the ones to the left, folded. (My shirt had a curve on the side thus giving it that curved look)

  4. Small romper 008 1308414970

-Unfold them and place them right sides together. -Pin them along the curved edges (as illustrated) and sew.

  5. Small romper 010 1308415105

-Open the piece up and place the other two seams together. -You shorts should appear. -Leaving them inside out, sew the inseam and the crotch. -Try them on to make sure they fit. -Adjust if necessary. -Set aside for now.

  6. Small romper 012 1308415266

It's time to make the band. -Grab the remainder of your shirt... -Cut the excess fabric off making the bottom even.

  7. Small romper 013 1308415481

-Measure and cut a 4" strip from the bottom. -Then cut that strip in half so that you have 2 strips that are 2" -Line the strip up with your shorts and cut them so they are even.

  8. Small romper 018 1308416000

-Place the right side of one strip facing the right side of the shorts and the right side of the other strip facing the wrong side of the shorts. -Line the side seams up...pin...sew -Press the seams for a cleaner finish

  9. Small romper 020 1308416719

Now for the top)... -Grab the shirt and remove the sleeves -Hold on to the sleeves.

  10. Small romper 021 1308416717

-Measure your bust at the fullest part. Divide that number in half and add an inch or two. (You want to be able to step into it) -Cut the shirt so that it matches your bust measurement (I had to cut the neck line and shoulders off of my shirt so mine looks funny in the pic)

  11. Small romper 023 1308416766

-Match the bottom part of the top to the shorts. -Cut the top so that the bottom is even to the shorts. -Your piece should be wider on the top and a little smaller on the bottom.

  12. Small romper 009 1308417205

-Place the two top pieces right sides together and sew the side seams creating a tube top.

  13. Small romper 026 1308417478

-With your tube top still wrong side out, fold the top under 1/4" and press. Then fold it under another 1/2". -Press, pin and sew. -Try to keep a 1/8" seam allowance. -Because we are putting elastic in the back only, do not sew all the way around. Start your stitch at the back just short of the side seam. Sew from one side to the other stopping short of the other side seam. Then sew the front. This leaves two small openings.

  14. Small romper 033 1308418195

Let's add elastic... -Cut a piece of elastic equal to half of your bust measurement minus 2-3 inches. -Use a safety pin to thread the elastic from one side of the garment to the other. -While pulling the safety pin, tuck the other end into the opening and sew it in place. Then carefully do the other side. (Try not to lose your elastic) -Stitch the opening closed along the bottom. -The back should look like the picture.

  15. Small romper 027 1308418726

-For the straps and ruffles, you can use a different fabric to add more color or, use some of your scraps. -Measure your shoulder from the front of your arm pit to the back. Add a couple of inches for easy on and off. -Cut two strips that are 1" wide by this measurement -Fold the strip in 1/4" on each side and press. Then fold the entire strip in half so you have a 1/4" strap. Sew it together (make two of these)

  16. Small romper 035 1308419050

-Pin the in the inside of the top and sew them in place. -Then sew them in the back.

  17. Small romper 025 1308419160

-Now for the ruffles... Take those sleeves you cut off earlier and open them up flat. Cut as many 4" strips as the sleeves will allow. -Stitch the strips end to end so you get one long strip. -Fold it in half and press

  18. Small romper 029 1308419363

-Sew a baste stitch all the way down the strip. -Create the ruffle by pulling the bottom thread.

  19. Small romper 036 1308419500

-Pin the ruffles right side down to the top front of the garment. -Press them down to the body of the garment and top stitch them in place.

  20. Small romper 030 1308419738

-The ruffles should look like this

  21. Small romper 038 1308420067

-Finally let's put it all together!=0D -With the bottom inside out place the top inside the bottom right sides together. The straps should face downward. -Line the side seams up. Pin and sew to together. -Turn it right side out and press the seams flat. -You can also add elastic in the waist or even a draw string. I chose to leave it out so I could have a relaxed fit.
