Even if you think nothing of a red wine spill on a pale shirt, the thought of cleaning suede can be a bit daunting. I have found a very good method for reviving suede, especially when it has been squashed down and gone a bit flat or shiny through wear:

Instructions

  1. Half fill a kettle and put it on to boil (on the hob, if you have a suitable kettle).

  2. When the steam starts coming out of the spout, hold up the suede, so that the steam is directed on to the marked area – be careful when doing this, as it is very easy to burn yourself on the steam, as I have discovered . . . (if you do catch your hand, stick it in a bowl of cold water immediately, and keep it there as long as you can – see page 57).

  3. Repeat until you have steamed all the affected areas, and they look darker.

  4. Use a towel or piece of kitchen paper to blot the excess moisture.

  5. Brush immediately with a suede brush; like magic, the pile will be brought up.
