About

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic. This was one of the first projects I saw on Cut Out and Keep as a wall hanging. I’ve decided to take it in a little bit of a different direction and use it as a piece of interest for my table, using glitter and candles to make an interesting effect with light once it’s finished.

You Will Need (1 thing)

  • Gold spray Paint , gold glitter, craft glue, paint brush, scissors, pencil, used toilet rolls, a flat tray to hold your glitter, and a box large enough to spray your figurines in.

Steps (5 steps, 90 minutes)

  1. 1

Step 1: Cut up the toilet rolls by flattening them with your palm and creasing them on the edges. I then cut segments 2cm wide out of the rolls. Any smaller and the cardboard will buckle when you glue it together and stand it up.

  2. 2

Step 2: Lay the segments out in the pattern you want. I look inspiration from the lily candle holders in the photo. You’ll need to take care how you arrange the segments on the bottom of the figure, making sure there are at least 4 with a flat edge on the bottom so it stands up properly. Once you’ve arranged it how you like, take a photo in case you can’t remember where everything goes!

  3. 3

Step 3: Glue the pieces together by using the paint brush to cover the ends of the segments, then press together with the segments on either side. They will adhere pretty quickly, so you can glue it all in one sitting. Here is where the photo might come in handy!

  4. 4

Step 4: Spray paint the final figure once the glue has dried. You might need two coats to cover all of the cardboard. I turned my box upside down and laid the figure on the base so I could access the spaces in the cardboard more easily, and moved the can about to get the best coverage on the first coat. There will be a few little nooks and crannies that will need a second coat.

  5. 5

Step 5: Brush some more glue over the edges of the figure that will be facing outwards. Put a liberal amount of glitter into your tray and press the glue side down. You’ll need to move it around to get the best coverage, and maybe even use your fingers to reach all of the sections.

Set up in my lounge room, you’d never know that it was painted toilet rolls!
