There are many tutorials online, I took tips from them all. Basically, tear the bed sheets into strips and crochet them as if they were yarn (very very thick yarn). You need a very very large crochet hook. This can be done in any pattern, but I like circles. (And of course you can use any scrap fabric you can find. I used polyester blends but I hear cotton is best.)
