Having acquired a 1950's vintage powder compact and realizing it needed a pouch for protection / presentation I decided to provide one. All stitches were hand sewn so timing is an estimate based on the fact that I have produced only a prototype and most people will likely use a sewing machine which may be far quicker. I have use silk thread for final stitching which is far less noticeable but cotton / polyester thread could be used – the finished result dependent on the skills / stitch used.

Take measurements – I just placed the compact on a sheet of cardboard and drew around. Next I used a compass to enlarge and produce a cardboard template. The result was slightly too large but within acceptability. A mock-up could be produced to determine precise measurement.
Mark out and cut material as shown in photographs. The interfacing is cut to the same size as the patterned material. The satin lining is also cut to this size. Felt is provided for padding to the compact so is slightly less in diameter (reduces the bulk at the edges of the pouch). Bias binding is 12mm in width for pouch opening and 18mm for outer circle. The pouch requires a disc of printed fabric, felt, interfacing and satin for each side (i.e. 2 discs of each).
Apply interfacing to each disc of felt.
Assemble the six resultant discs and tack sew the outside of the pouch remembering to leave a gap for the pouch opening larger than the compact as the outer circle of bias binding will overlap the lips of the pouch opening by about 1cm each side (check fit after tacking but before final sewing).
Pin then sew bias bias binding to pouch opening. Similarly apply bias binding to the outside of the pouch overlapping the pouch opening at each end around 1cm.
