Warm and stylish at the same time! This hat will put a smile on your face, with dangling pom-poms that swing around with your every movement. Make a coordinating flower accent with pieces of felt that match the colors of the hat. Getting Started To determine the size of the hat, measure your head. Add 1" (2.5 cm) to this measurement for the seam allowances, to determine the total width of the piece you’ll need to cut. You can also wrap the lower edge of the sweater around your head to double-check the measure- ment. Sweaters stretch differ- ently, which affects how snugly the hat will fit.

Warm and stylish at the same time! This hat will put a smile on your face, with dangling pom-poms that swing around with your every movement. Make a coordinating flower accent with pieces of felt that match the colors of the hat. Getting Started To determine the size of the hat, measure your head. Instructions

  1. Small screen shot 2010 11 19 at 01.01.27 1290128701

Mark the desired width along the lower edge of the sweater (see diagram A). Measure and mark 15" (38.1 cm) up from the lower edge several times for the height of the hat. Cut the sweater along the markings (see diagram A).

  2. Fold the rectangle in half widthwise with the right sides together. Hand or machine stitch the seam.

  3. Small screen shot 2010 11 19 at 01.01.34 1290128674

Draw a curve from the top of one side to the opposite side with chalk (see diagram B), using a plate or shaped ruler as a guide. Pin the top layers with the wrong sides together along the curve. Machine stitch; back- stitch at the beginning and end of the seam. Trim away the excess fabric and turn the hat right side out.

  4. Cut two pieces of yarn, each about 4" (10.2 cm) long. Knot one end and use a hand- sewing needle to run the oppo- site end of yarn from the inside, through the point of the hat. Repeat with remaining piece of yarn. Glue a large pom-pom onto each yarn end.

  5. Cut three different color pieces of felt, using the pattern on page 150. Glue them together with the largest piece on the bottom and the little pom-pom on top. Glue the bottom layer to the pin back. Fold up the cuff of the hat and hold it in place with the pin.
