Pi Container

PRINT TEMPLATE. Find a template for the pi symbol or any other symbol you want. it shouldn't be too skinny or you won't have much room and it will be difficult to do the sides. I used this one: http://www.zazzle.com/pi_template_invites-161949596755012162
TRACE AND CUT 2. Trace you template onto a piece of card board. Make sure that if you chose a symbol with a gap in the middle, that you don't trace that onto your template. Like for pi, I didn't trace the middle, but did a small curve between the two sides.
CUT STRIP. Determine the depth that you want it to be. Mine was 2 in and add as seam allowance to both sides. I would recommend the seam allowance to be more than a 1/2 inch. It should be long enough to go around the perimeter of your shape. You will probably have to cut more than 1
CUT TRIANGLES. In the seam allowances on both sides, cut little triangles or notches. The point should be on the line. You can score the seam allowance first to make it easier to fold. The closer together the triangles are, the easier it will be to manipulate.
FOLD THE TABS DOWN.
GLUE SIDE TO FRONT. Line up the side strip to the top of the front piece. I put mine in about 1 inch. glue the tabs to the front piece. it looks better if you do one tab at a time, but I was lazy and did whole rows. When you get to a corner, make sure to crease it all the way across so that it line sup better.
GLUE THE BACK ON. Using the same method as in 6, glue the back on.
CUT PAPER FOR THE SIDES. Cut a strip of wrapping paper or decorative paper that is the same dimensions as the side strip. The seam allowance isn't as important.
GLUE TO THE SIDES. Line up the center with the sides making sure there is an equal amount of paper on both sides. Allow for a little bit of overhang at the top where the opening is. Apply elmer's glue or school glue to the side and using a piece of scrap thin card, spread it out and down. Then press the paper onto the side. Continue for the rest of the paper
CUT THE SEAM ALLOWANCE. Take your scissors and cut slits along the seam allowance continuing all around on both sides. You don't have to cut the triangles because it is easier to manipulate. At the opening, cut a slit on both sides with your scissors facing the front. Place glue on the inside of the tap and glue.
GLUE THE SEAM ALLOWANCE. Apply school glue all around the perimeter and push down the "tabs". When they overlap, you may want to apply more glue on top.
CUT FRONT AND BACK PAPER. Using the template from before, cut paper for the front and back. Cut a little outside the lines so that you can fit it better and cut off the excess.
GLUE. Using the same method as before, spreading the glue thin with the cardboard, and place the front and back on. I suggest moving it more toward the top so that you have more excess at the top.
TRIM. Trim the excess. you may want an xacto knife or a box cutter.
CUT AND FOLD OVER EXCESS. At the top, cut the sides along the edge of the top. Then place glue on the inside of the tap and fold down. Do the same to the back
OPTIONAL: FRONT PIECE WITH NAMES. go into word and type whatever name you want. Then copy and paste that until it covers enough to be bigger than your stencil. Print it out and using your stencil, trace it and cut it out. This time, include the gap in the middle. Glue to the front of your box.
CUT BOX FOR THE LID. measure your opening and determine how big you want the lid to be. Add 1 cm on all sides (you can add more to make increase the height). Using a ruler, draw this rectangle on a piece of cardboard.
PART 2. Take the measurement that you wanted the lid to be WITHOUT the 1 cm on all 4 sides and add the 1 cm to only 3 sides (suggest 2 short and 1 long). then add this to the original rectangle lining up two long sides.
CUT THE BOX OUT. You can add tabs to the perimeter if you want to make it easier to glue.
SCORE THE LINES AND CUT THE TABS. Using the back of a box cutter, score the lines that you created. Be sure not to cut through! Then cut according to the picture. Make sure you stop when you hit the vertical lines.
FOLD AND GLUE. fold in where you scored and glue the tabs. You may want to cut the corners at an angle to make it easier.
CUT A SMALLER BOX FOR THE FOOT. repeat steps 17-21 but make the length about 1-3 cm shorter or small enough to fit inside the hole.
WRAP AND GLUE TOGETHER. Wrap both boxes in paper and glue to secure. Place glue on the smaller one and glue it to the bigger one, making sure to center it as best you can.
CUT AND FOLD THE NOB. Take a long strip of paper, the width is up to you, but the original width will be divided into fourths. Then fold the two sides toward the middle and fold. Take the two sides and fold it in half to create a clean edge. You can glue if you want.
ROLL AND GLUE. starting from one end, roll the paper into a nice tight spiral. Glue the end to secure. Then glue it to the top of the larger box.
PLACE AND FILL. Put the lid on your box and fill it with treats!
