Draw Paint Print like the Great Artists
David Hockney made photo collages called 'joiners' of people, landscape and objects.

His first joiners were made with polaroid prints, which were square shaped. Later he used regular photo-lab rectangular prints (but you can print your own.) Hockney's photo collages are very much like cubist paintings. In cubist artwork the subject is seen from many different angles at the same time.

You Will Need

  • How to make a collages. Photo Collages - Step 1
    Step 1

I took 9 photographs of this boy from all different angles. I cut them up, cropping into them, then I joined them together like a puzzle.

Using a grid of squares is also an effective way of creating a cubist, Hockney-like collage.

I used several photographs to make this collage of a swimming pool.

    Step 3

Collect photographs (or look for photos from magazines) of water to complete the picture. They don't have to be the same blue - in fact, the more varied the better. Try not to lose the black line of the grid. This helps pull the image together.
