Create a pattern from your pet’s photo. Print the photo out with the face measuring about 2 ̋ × 2 ̋ (5.1 × 5.1cm) to fit within the floral frame pattern, or large enough to fill the hoop if you’re going to omit the frame. Place a piece of tracing paper over the photo and use a black pen to trace the most prominent lines of the face. You can make your pattern as simple or as complex as you choose: Either simply trace the outlines of the face, nose, eyes, and mouth, or go further by adding more lines for fur, stripes, and whiskers. You can draw your own floral details or frame around the face. TIP Add your pet s’ name at the bottom below the frame using your handwriting or the Alphabet and Numbers patterns
When you have a pattern you like, transfer it onto the fabric. Secure the fabric onto the hoop.
Embroider the design using the stitch guide as a reference. Use 6 threads of floss for the outline of the face and the heart-shaped frame. Use 3 threads for the face details and the floral pattern, and if your pet has whiskers, use 2 threads for them. Keep your photograph nearby as you stitch. You can always add more details if you want to make your design look more like your real-life pet. Small details, such as white dots on the eyes, can really bring your portrait to life. TIP Instead of just line art, add more colors and details to your pet portrait. Use colors that match your pet s’ eyes and fur or make a pinkish nose and ears. If you’re feeling adventurous, fill in the whole face with color using satin stitches and long and short stitches.
