Pannier Out Of Child Seat

Fantasy correct backpack

For the prehistoric live roleplay event I'll be attending I wanted a kind of backpack for all my stuff. I'm a hunter gatherer and traveling (on foot) a lot, so how to carry any supplies? This is in no way historically correct. But it works and does not look bad. I just love thrift stores! The child seat was about 13 euros. The wicker serving tray about 2 euros. The cow hide was for 50 euro (!! new it costs 177) online at Marktplaats and was already partially used (by me) for another project.

Description

For the prehistoric live roleplay event I'll be attending I wanted a kind of backpack for all my stuff. I'm a hunter gatherer and traveling (on foot) a lot, so how to carry any supplies? This is in no way historically correct. But it works and does not look bad. I just love thrift stores! The child seat was about 13 euros. The wicker serving tray about 2 euros. The cow hide was for 50 euro (!! new it costs 177) online at Marktplaats and was already partially used (by me) for another project.

Instructions

  1. Small 1 origineel 1287502224

Get your child seat. It's a seat for on the back of a bicycle. The feet of the child are encased in the lower part. You see? We're going to use it upside down.

  2. Small 2 bodemloos 1287502232

Remove the bottoms. I.e. the part where the child would sit and the part where the feet would rest. This is the hardest part of the project and it took me several hours. I had to fidget out all the small nails that were used to attach the wooden planks to the basketry, without destroying all the wicker.

  3. Small 3 nieuwebodem 1287502252

Here you see the new bottom, which is where the original opening was. It is made out of a wicker serving tray. I had to saw off the iron handles first... another tricky part of this project. Then came the part where I had to bend the tray to fit inside the seat...

  4. Small 4 schouderbanden 1287502449

I made shoulder straps from a piece of cow hide I had left over from my 'prehistoric leggings'. A cow hide (carpet) is really large! Getting the cow hide through the wicker and back again was again tricky.

  5. Small 5 flappen 1287502459

Added flaps on the tops to close them off. Again, cow hide. I sewed them on with straps of leather.

  6. Small 6 done 1287502467

All done! Wear with pride. In this picture there's nothing in it yet. You see the little plateau for adding a bedroll?
