Description

I based this hat on the last ear-flap hat I made, except that the entire hat is in stockinette stitch (no garter band).

Instructions

  1. Ear-flaps: Cast on 5 stitches. Row 1: *Knit front and back in first stitch, knit middle stitches, knit front and back in last stitch* Row 2: Purl all stitches. Repeat rows 1-2 until you have 13 stitches on your needle. Continue knitting one row, purling one row (stockinette stitch) until the ear-flap is 3-4 inches. Knit 2 ear-flaps.

  2. With one ear-flap on the needle, cast on 20 stitches using knitted cast-on.

  3. Knit on the second ear-flap. Cast on 16 stitches. Join in the round, being careful not to twist.

  4. Continue knitting all the way around until your hat measures 6 inches.

  5. Start decreasing. Row 1: *Knit 8 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 2: Knit all stitches. Row 3: *Knit 7 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 4: Knit all stitches. Row 5: *Knit 6 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 6: *Knit 5 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 7: *Knit 4 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 8: *Knit 3 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 9: *Knit 2 stitches, knit 2 together* all around. Row 10: *Knit 1 stitch, knit 2 together* all around. Row 11: *Knit 2 together* all around. With a tapestry needle, thread yarn through remaining stitches, secure yarn, and weave the ends.

  6. Optional tails on ear-flaps: Cut 9 strings of yarn measuring about 24" each. Weave all 9 pieces through the end of one ear-flap. Divide evenly into groups of 3 and braid until 2 inches are left. Tie a knot in the end. Repeat on the second ear-flap.

  7. Ears: With a crochet hook (size I), chain 7 stitches. Row 1: skip first stitch, single crochet in remaining stitches (6) Row 2: skip first stitch, single crochet 2 stitches, skip next stitch, single crochet in last stitch (4) Row 3: skip first stitch, single crochet 1 stitch, skip 1, single crochet in last stitch (2). Row 4: Skip first stitch, single crochet in last stitch (1). Weave in the end. Make 2. With a tapestry needle, sew the ears onto the top of the hat.

  8. This hat is very similar to the ear-flap video I made, but instead of a garter band and garter ear-flaps, I knitted the entire hat in stockinette stitch.
