Also known as: Ashley’s Stopper Knot This is a bulkier stopper knot that can be used to prevent the rope from pulling through an object or to prevent an object from sliding off the rope. KNOT NOTES Legend has it that around 1910, Clifford Ashley, author of The Ashley Book of Knots, noticed a knot aboard a boat in an oyster fishing fleet. It was lumpy and unrecognizable. What he later determined to be a wet, swollen, and poorly tied Figure Eight Knot had become known as the Oysterman’s Stopper Knot or the Ashley’s Stopper Knot.
