Step 6 is giving me a headache! I'm sure once work it out I'll realise I'm dumb cos it's taking me so long! Any chance of a video to help??? I love the finished result!

OH! I get it. Step 5-6, you fold the (closed) corners to the inside, and that should push the wrong sides(white side)of your paper together? giving you the picture in step 6.
Step 7, you're taking the horizontal edge(the top one, in the picture) and folding it up towards the peak? and then opening the wings in step 8.
Step 10, taking one whole side (as opposed to one corner) and folding in back outward and leaving a small part in the center folded for the body?
Step 12 looks like you took the side corners and folded them into the center? No...that doesn't look right.
I think my paper was too small, but I ended up with a decent butterfly. Thanks!

Great butterfly! I love the fact that the very last step ends with the belly facing up. I was staring at it and thinking to myself "That doesn't look like the finished product...." but then I flipped it over and voila!
Here's my attempt at elaborating on the instructions for steps people seem to be having trouble with:
STEP 6: The key words here are SQUASH FOLD. After you fold the corners down in Step 5, rotate it 180 degrees. Pick up just the top layer at the bottom left corner and pull it to the right. Pull it all the way over and bend out that corner fold until it lays flat. You should now have one layer on the left and three on the right. This is called a Squash fold. Now flip it horizontally and do the same fold again, left to right. You should now have something that looks like the picture in Step 6.
STEP 8: This is another squash fold. Pick up the top layer of the bottom left corner and fold it up over, flattening it out into a triangle. Do the same with the top layer of the bottom right corner.
STEP 10: Here you're making the first fold for the body. In the picture you can see three points on the left. The smaller the angle between the top two points, the bigger the gap is between the bottom wings and the body in the finished product. I tried it two ways and I think a large angle is best, to give you a small neat gap in the end.
STEP 12: Hold the body like in the picture. You should see a kite shape with a white tip (or coloured if you're using double-sided paper). Stick a thumbnail behind one side of the tip and squish it towards you in a valley fold. Hold it down and pull the lower corner away in a mountain fold. Do the same with the opposite side of the kite. You should now have a skinny, pointy tip sticking out from the bottom of the wings. This is the back of the butterfly's tail end and gives the body depth.
If you're still having trouble, click on the pictures to enlarge them and look carefully at the folds to see what's going on. Try to pick out mountain and valley folds. This may help you figure out what to do. You can also google "origami squash fold" for step by step pictures of that technique.
okay, so i got trough 6.
but 8?
what flaps? i have 2 flaps sticking out of the things bottom, and there's falaps you can fold over to the left or right....so which of the flaps should i fold over?
Step 10 is easier than you think. The only thing is did, was taking the upper wing and instead of opening the whole butterfly, you fold it, so you make one half of the body.
okayyy got step 6!!!
its just opening the whole thing up again, so youre at step 3 and than making a loop, like its in the aids ribbon without crossing the ends at the bottom if that makes any sense. *-* couldnt be easier
this looks really good! unfortunately mine went wrong...it looks vaguely like a butterfly but think i went wrong somewhere...can't work out where though. hopefully if i try again later i can get such a good result as yours! thanks for this!
I'm really sorry... Step 5 to 6 is very hard to explain. It's best when you just fold it open, so you have step 3 with some extra folds. Then you follow the diagonal folds.
what do you do in step 6?
follow up all the folds? then you get something with a triangle and 2 bits sticking out...i get a rectangle with a triangle shape on top...help?
Step 10 is not too hard, I just can't explain it. You have folded the butterfly in half, and to form the body you have to make a kind of haromicafold. When you look from the downside it should look like /\/\.
I'm sorry for the ununderstandable steps, I really have to find me a dictionary. Step 7 is a sort of preparing for step 8, you hve to fold that little flap, so you can form the wings...
I am pleading ignorance here...does origami paper still exist? Did you use that type of paper? I keep seeing all these great butterflies made out of old maps or atlases....how do you think that that would turn out?
not really. i just dont understand what you mean by follow.
