Here is a great dress that I really like. I've seen dresses like these in stores, but always thought that I could make my own. And here it is! The bigger the shirt to begin with, the longer the dress will be.

Description

Here is a great dress that I really like. I've seen dresses like these in stores, but always thought that I could make my own. And here it is! The bigger the shirt to begin with, the longer the dress will be.

Instructions

  1. Small dscf9027 1248992822

    Start with your oversized Tee.

  2. Small dscf9028 1248992839

Then cut off the sleeves. You'll need these later.

  3. Small dscf9030 1248992848

    And the neck.

  4. Small dscf9033 1248992861

Now cut a gradual slope starting at the bottom corner and going up to the used-to-be armpit.

  5. Small dscf9036 1248992894

Turn the whole thing inside-out and match up the sides.

  6. Small dscf9037 1248992988

Now sew up the edges. You don't need a lot of seam allowance, because the material doesn't fray.

  7. Small dscf9039 1248993006

    Here's your seam.

  8. Small dscf9041 1248993453

For the triangle top, cut the sleeves where the bottom seam used to be. Now you have a sort of trapezoid shape. Cut a triangle from the sleeve. the bottom should be where the finished edge is.

  9. Small dscf9042 1248993476

Cut another triangle from the other sleeve in the same fashion. I recommend extending one of the bottom corners a bit so that the two triangles can overlap some. Sew a seam on the two unfinished edges.

  10. Small dscf9047 1248993680

Now, back to the body of the dress. Fold about an inch and a half down at the top of the skirt. This will make a casing when you sew it all together. Then turn it inside-out, keeping the fold in.

  11. Small dscf9048 1248993077

Take the two triangles and lay them out the way you want them to be in the finished product.

  12. Small dscf9049 1248993814

Now take the two triangles and flip them so that the wrong sides are facing up. Center them along the top of the skirt so that they overlap where the fold is on the other side. Sorry, kind of confusing!

  13. Small dscf9051 1248994176

Pin the triangles in place. The pins should go through the folded piece, the skirted piece, and the triangles. Turn it back right side out and sew, first along the top of the folded part and then along the bottom. Now there's a tube.

  14. Small dscf9056 1248994328

Here's the tube. Now take the pins out.

  15. Small dscf9058 1248994434

Now you need to salvage three strips. I got two from the back of the old neckpiece and one from the front.

  16. Small dscf9059 1248994513

Cut one of the strips in half and sew the other two together, end to end.

  17. Small dscf9064 1248994552

Now you have all of the fabric ready.

  18. Small dscf9065 1248994600

Sew each of the shorter strips onto the top of the two triangles.

  19. Small dscf9066 1248994688

Then cut two slits in the back of the casing. Using your safety pin, (which is pinned to the end of your long strip), to thread the string through the casing.

  20. Small dscf9069 1248995060

Now tie the strips behind your neck and pull the drawstring tight- you're all done!
