Description

I wanted to have some sort of noteboard, and since I love chalkboards, I was hoping to have an actual one. Now, buying one would have been too easy, right?

Instructions

  1. Small tafel 01

First, gather all your supplies. I snatched the board from a disposal site, it didn't have the measurements I had planned for but free is free, right? I would have preferred chalkboard paint, but no store I went to sold it. Meh, self-adhevive foil it is. Cover your working area in old newspapers or any other disposable material. Wear old clothes. Also, study the googles for some inspiration on Art Nouveau Frames.

  2. Small tafel 02

If you couldn't get hold of a board that's already white, either start laying down at least two coats of white paint - or leave it as it is if the look suits the rest of your interior. ;) If you paint it, don't forget the sides (and maybe the backside, but I couldn't be bothered...) Let the layers dry according to whatever description of the paint you're using says.

  3. Small tafel 03

As soon as everything is dry, lay down your pattern with a pencil. Use it very lightly! I strongly recommend creating some sort of template. I drew my design on a piece of newspaper, spaced in ratio to the corners as I wanted it to be in the end, cut it out and then used the 'negative' as a guideline, filling in the inside bits afterwards.

  4. Small tafel 04

Now here's the time consuming bit: Paint your design on with black (acrylic) paint. Make really, really sure it's all symmetrical, see that lower right corner? I messed up. :( Cover any tiny mistakes or pencil leftovers with white paint.

  5. Small tafel 05

Measure the size of the actual chalkboard surface, decide on a shape, make a template. Now continue with whatever material you could get a hold on to, so either paint the chalkboard on or glue the foil on. ...Which is a pain in the ass to get right so here's my little trick: I put down tiny markers on where the foil is supposed to go. Then I started to pull the backside off the top, about 4 or 5 inches down. Folded the backside material down flat, placed the lower side with the backside still in place where it has to be. Then I placed my knee on it to keep it in place. It looks silly, but it works. Now I carefully placed the adhesive part according to the marks, pressed it on and worked my way down. As soon as the top part is placed correctly, you can't go wrong anymore. Ta-daa! I didn't screw it to the wall but just leaned it against it, if you want to put it on the wall with power tools, please contact a specialist about that. :P

  6. Put down things on it, whee! I use it for packlists, recipes, to-do lists, quotes, whatever. :D
