One of the best holiday's for me and my boyfriend was when we went to San Francisco in 2010- On the holiday I collected a few little things- match books, brochures, ticket stubs etc to create a scrap/photo book. I also used the cartoons page from the "San Francisco Chronicle" to create the surface for this upcycled side table. I really love the way it looks and whenever we use it it reminds us of the great trip we had.

Instructions

  1. Small original picture 1320590600

This is what it looked like originally, just a normal pine side table. We've had it for ages and it had a few stains- time for a revamp!

  2. Small stage 1 sanded 1320590613

First the table had to be sandpapered- To get all the stains and crud off and also to make the surface easier to glue/paint onto. I would reccomend sanding outside as the dust gets everywhere! This is what it looked like afterwards.

  3. Small stage 3 1320590625

Then I used PVA glue on both sides of my newspaper cut-out and stuck it to the surface of the table. I went over the newspaper in a thin layer of PVA using an old paintbrush to make sure it was firmly glued down (no air bubbles or dry edges) This extra layer on top also means that the varnish that will be added later will not damage the newspaper. Allow the glue to dry, I left mine overnight just to be safe.

  4. Small stage 4 1320590639

When the glue is dry, the table will be painted in a colour of your choice. I chose a small pot of luxury emulsion as it sticks to the wood nicely and isnt too runny. To protect the newspaper cut out I used glossy peelable tape to stick over some old sheets of cosmo, the tape can be peeled off afterwards and should give you nice straight edges.

  5. Small stage 5 1320607486

Paint the rest of the table, leave to dry. You can add another layer of paint if neccessary and again wait till its dry. When its dry, peel off the protective sheets- touch up any edges with a small paintbrush or cotton wool bud.

  6. Small stage 6.1 1320706246

Make sure the table is completely dry! Then add a layer of clear varnish all over to finish. I used a pot of clear varnish and an old paintbrush to spread as it was much cheaper, but I would reccommend using spray varnish if you can!

  7. Small stage 6.2 1320706250

Leave to dry for several hours- then sit back and admire your work!
