So I noticed that my pony plush got a great response. For a little Valentine's gift I made this sock pony tutorial so everyone can try to make their own. However, early warning: - This is not for beginner! If you really want to try then perhaps you can just give it a shot. When there's a will there's a way. Remember that you have a pair of sock! In case you mess up the first, you still have another shot so be confident ;) - Be patient. Just because its a sock toy doesn't mean its not a lot of work. I'm telling you, it is. I spent hours for making this and recording it in a pattern. - Don't stick to the pattern if you want to do so. Be creative! The pattern is only a guidance. - Always look closely to the picture AND to the pattern when you're confused. - Don't worry! I made the tutorial as detailed as I can. The pony I make is Fluttershy because I only have a pale yellow sock left in my stash. The other half was gone for a minion sock. Either way, she's my favorite :) If you'd like to make other pony, go ahead! The mane pattern for Fluttershy is included so you can use it as a guidance. I left some short notes there. CHOOSING YOUR MATERIAL: - This is important. You need a fluffy sock to make this pony. I don't recommend regular cloth sock to make this. - The material is normaly 100% polyester, which is very stretchy and has a texture like towel. its also oftenly called "cuddle sock" - Choose a LARGE one. Minimum size is 39 if I would say. - I made the mane with thin (yes it HAS to be thin or it won't look nice) fleece to make it look nicer. Or you can choose felt if its easier for you. Again, be careful and be patient with this material. its very soft, but it frays a lot. Yes, a lot.
Look for the joint of the tip of the sock. See where my finger is and see where is yours. It's near where your toe should be if you're wearing it. Its normally easy to find it since its hard, in contrast to the soft fabric. Use this point as your guidance. This point normally should be the tip of the nose. TIPS: they're not always in the same spot. mine is somewhere above the toe, and the sock I used for the sock fox was below. (its commonly below, that's why it's like that in the pattern)
When you get the joint, start stuffing. This is the easiest way to see how it looks. Remember that I actually don't use any pattern to make this (I made patterns only for mane and tail). But if you're not sure, you can use the pattern I made if the size of sock is more or less the same. Keep squishing until you get a nice shape. Don't forget to poke them with tweezers.
Cut and sew with ladder stitch. Fold the sides inside so it doesn't fray.
When you're done it should look like an onigiri. If it does, great! If not don't worry we're still not done yet. I did quite some touch ups for this plush myself.
Now, the point is that I'm trying to make a small version of the sleeping baby Fluttershy plush here. Look closely at the picture. Poke one point with your finger to estimate where you should stitch. This is to shape the mouth and nose, try to make the shape similar with the big Fluttershy. Pinch where you poke, folding the fabric inside, and sew.
When you're done, both head shapes should look alike. If you're not satisfied with the shape, keep folding and stitching several spots so they look symmetrical.
Cut the body. It should look like an H.
Again, fold the feet parts inside to avoid fraying with curved edges to resemble a feet. Leave the last feet half open and stuff then close the opening. Don't stuff too much or the pony will be too fat, but make sure its firm and doesn't have an "airy" spot. Always use tweezers to poke the filling, its important to make it even and fill the empty space. TIPS: the pressure point of this one is the tip of the legs. let the middle part of body puffy but not so much (you can do it by fraying the polyfill before you stuff. the indicator is the hardness of the plush). You'll see why in the next step.
This is the result. Yeah, its a bit fat so lets shape it up. Press the hip part, exactly in the middle (a bit above my thumbs) and sew with a curved shape. Sorry, can't explain better but have a look at the pattern, it will help you. This step is optional but it makes the pony looks much better.
See the difference? Yeah the shape is nicer and the legs are slightly smaller. Choose the slightly smaller looking legs and sew the tip together.
Now, try to put the head on. Looking good? Then attach. PS. I didn't put any wings but I embroider it with a wing shape. if you want to do this, do this before you attach the head. You can also just make it from felt if its easier.
Embroider the eyes or put on a safety eyes.
This is how I embroider the wing, just if you're wondering. The pattern is only for guidance and I embroider it on the edges. The pattern is included.
Cut and attach the ears. Its easier to sew it first on the fabric then cutting it. Now, to the mane! Cut and sew, then do the same with the tail. I made Fluttershy so that's the pattern I included so if you want your own pony, well..be creative! I'd love to see the result. Sorry no pictures. I totally forgot to take pictures at this step because I was busy redoing the mane. Did 4 tries of each mane. TIPS: Thin fleece have a more decent look than felt but takes more time. My tips is make small nips at the curvy part so it looks nicer when you turn it inside out. You can also make it from felt if its easier for you.
YAY! Now you have your own sock pony xD My Fluttershy looks quite alike and I'm quite happy with the result. Go make yours! xD
