Most ribbons can be lightly melted to seal the ends. It's a great way to keep it from fraying.

i make these for my shop but i dont use batting..just an extra layer of cloth and it works great...and abit easier cutting out the batting step...i like these kinds better then the crochet kind anyway...nicely done

I just used regular low loft cotton quilting batting; I tested it today on a Starbucks cup and my hand was warm but not burning (so it was actually the best of all worlds because it was still warm and warmed up my fingers ;P I think you could layer the batting or use fleece if you were worried about heat escaping.
