Happy to hold CD's in his mouth for you.
This is a good weekend project. The reason it takes so long is because you have to wait for the paint to dry. The shelf holds about 50 CD's so it's worth waiting for the paint. Also this cost me no more than $13.00.

  • Step 1

First gather your supplies. You will need a piece of pine board, a tape measure, a saw and something to write with for this step.

Divide wood into 3 pieces, each measuring about 2' length. These will be the top, bottom and back of the shelf. Next, cut 2 pieces, both measuring 4 3/4 in length (shorter than they are wide). These will be the side pieces.

  • Step 2

Using the drill, make 10 holes in one of the 2' pieces. 5 near the top and 5 near the bottom. This is the back.

  • Step 3

Using the screws, attach the back to the top. The top will be coming out from the back.

  • Step 4

Now attach the side pieces. Do this by sliding them into the corner where the other two pieces meet. Attach the bottom once these are sturdy.

  • Step 5

What you should have now is the shelf only very, very plain. It's time to paint!

You may want to primer the shelf first. However, I was too impatient so I didn't and it turned out just fine.

Pick a color of spray paint for the monster's skin. I chose olive green but I bet orange or dark blue would be cool.

  • Step 6

Spray the top, bottom, sides and edges with your paint. I used about 3-4 coats, just because pine is very porous. Let this dry for about 1-2 hours.

  • Step 7

Next you will need some red/pink and white acrylic paint. The red or pink (whichever you like best, I used red), is going to be the inside of his mouth. The white, obviously, is his teeth.

Paint the whole inside of the shelf red except the back. The back will be white. Let this dry for an hour.

  • Step 8

You should now get some black acrylic paint to make lines for the teeth. If you are confident enough that you don't want any tape then go for it. I made guide lines for the teeth using masking tape.

  • Step 9

Now it should look pretty good. You just need to add the eyes. I used 2 orange Christmas light bulbs (you don't have to use orange) which required a 1/2 inch hole drill into the top.

Figure out where you want the eyes and measure the distance from each side. Mine are about 2'' from the side but you might want yours closer together.

  • Step 10

Drill the holes using a 1/2'' drill bit (or whatever size you need). Don't go all the way through the board though, stop at about halfway through.

Screw the bulbs into the wood until they are tight. You can also use glue if you want.

  • Step 11

He is going to need some pupils. I painted a big yellow oval on each eye, then a smaller black oval inside, then a little white cross (so they look shiny) using acrylic paints. You should probably use black and white but the yellow part (the iris) can be a different color. This should not take much time to dry, maybe 20 minutes.

  • Step 12

The shelf is done! It's time to hang it on your wall. To do this, turn it at about a 45º angle. Using 2 screws, attach the shelf at each end through through the back. Fill it up with your CD's and it's ready.
