i painted miss marilyn monroe's silhouette free-handed with black acrylic paint on a wooden plank i found lying extra in one of my linen closets upon move-in... the wood was already painted white with basic wall paint, so i used that as my base coat and painted my picture over top of it. i created my piece based on an actual photo of her. the piece of wood probably stands 2ft tall by 1ft wide, and is about 2 inches thick, so it gives a decent amount of space to work with.
