Description

Create a vintage-inspired, mixed media banner that's perfect for hanging this Halloween. This tutorial used a machine embroidered alphabet, but hand embroidery or even printed materials can be substituted to create a similar look as well.

Instructions

  1. Small 09 letters

Use your embroidery machine (you can substitute hand embroidery or printed alphabets for this step) to embroider each letter your desired message. You should be able to fit 2 letters on each hoop using the 3.5 x 5" Cirque Alphabet. In the photo above, the banner reads "All Hallows Eve".

  2. Small 09 papers

After embroidering the letters, use the fusible webbing on the backside of the material.Cut the fabric and fray the edges slightly to give it a more ‘rustic’ feel – then ironed the fabric directly onto a precut, 4.5″ X 6.5″ piece of paper. Note: While the precut papers are pretty, they are still very flimsy. So, if you want them to last for years to come, you’ll probably want to back each letter with a card stock of the same size (I used a glue stick to adhere the papers together).

  3. Small 09 holes

Next you’ll want to string your letters together. To do this, use the hole punch to make two small holes on the top center of each letter (this not only seems to give each letter balance when strung, but also some ‘support’ so the string doesn't eventually rip through the holes). String the 1/4″ ribbon through the lettering in your desired order\phrase... then hang your new banner on your mantle, banister, or doorway and enjoy!
