This is a quick and simple wallet to make. Using laminated cotton or oilcloth means you don't have to worry about fabric fraying and the elastic tie is an easy way to keep everything held together. You can use regular quilting cotton but you'll need to interface each piece.
This is a quick and simple wallet to make. Using laminated cotton or oilcloth means you don't have to worry about fabric fraying and the elastic tie is an easy way to keep everything held together. You can use regular quilting cotton but you'll need to interface each piece.
First cut out all your pieces: Two rectangles 7" x 4.5". These will be the inner and outer panels. Two rectangles 3" x 4.5". These will be the larger pockets. Two rectangles 2.25" x 4.5". These will be the smaller pockets.
Fold the top of each pocket panel under 1/4" and top stitch.
Layer the pockets onto the inner panel - small pocket on top of large pocket on the short ends of the panel, right sides facing up. Because laminated cotton and oilcloth show pin marks it is important to not use pins. I used tape that I peeled off after sewing. Binder clips, paper clips or quilter's clips work well, too. Using a basting stitch sew the pockets to the panel 1/4" from the edge all the way around.
Clip the corners of the pocket layers, leaving the bottom layer intact. This will help reduce bulk when we sew everything together.
Fold all sides of the inner and outer panel under by 1/4". The basting stitches you made on the inner panel will make a good guide for folding. Pin the two panels together and stitch around three sides leaving one short side open. With so many layers, naturally it can get bulky. To make things easier try using a walking foot or at least guiding the fabric under your foot. Be sure to use a fresh heavy duty needle.
Take the hair elastic and slip in a tiny amount into the seam of the open short end. Stitch closed. Now you can use the elastic to wrap the wallet and keep it closed!
