Cheap, easy, and quick mini hats anyone can make
I admit to having a sick love on mini hats. It actually stems from my secret love of steampunk, which isn't really something that you can incorporate into your style as an attorney. But, on Halloween I can indulge in my mini hat love.

These mini hats are just some of the possibilities that you can craft with a little hot glue and imagination. I really love these because they help use up all of the odds and ends ribbon scraps I have around the studio.

You can make this same hat by sewing all of the pieces to together, but it is really hard to sew the little corners.

  • How to make a top hat. Mini Hats Down And Dirty - Step 1
    Step 1

I will give you the instructions for the Queen of Hearts inspired mini top hat.

First, cut out the brim. I cut a heart that is about 4"x5". This is cut double and then I glued it together.

Always use HIGH temp glue guns. Low temp guns are nearly worthless and everything you make with them falls apart.

    Step 2

Next, I decide how tall I want the hat. I cut out a rectangle based on the size of the "brim". This piece was about 5"x8".

Cut it double and glue it together.

    Step 3

Glue the ends together. Snip off any excess. The seam doesn't matter b/c you are covering it up with trim in the next step.

    Step 4

Cut strips of trim and glue them down. I trim them even with the endges of the hat.

Next, pipe hot glue around the top rim of the hat. Push the hat down onto a square of felt that is bigger than the top of the hat.

Then, I trim the excess off to form the top of the hat. You could have used geometry and made some pattern pieces and fit the entire thing together perfectly, but it really doesn't matter.

Now I wanted to add some trim around the base of the hat. I glued lace down around the bottom and cut off the excess. You could also gue it down after you have glued to top onto the brim. I like doing it like this.

    Step 8

Add more glue onto the bottom of the lace and place it onto the brim.

Add your extra decorations, pins, bows, ribbons, etc.

Now you need to stick it on your head somehow. I glued this hat onto a headband. You can also glue the hat only a hair clip or a hair comb. For the little Marie Antoinette tricorn, I sewed it onto the wig.
I'm not doing a tutorial for the tricorn, but it was made the same way as this hat. Instead of a heart brim, you make a large circle. You pinch the circle into three corners and glue those - tri corn - get it. For that hat, I glued a layter of lace between the 2 layers of the brim and used many different trims. She won 2nd place in the costime contest.

Thank you for the info. I am pretty hooked on hot glue b/c I am extremely impatient and I love the instant gratification of hot glue. Also, I love to actually sew my mini hats, but for my sewing tutorials for my blog I try to do many no sew projects for people who aren't crazy about sewing like I am. Happy Crafting!

IF you are tired of using Hot Glue then you can always use Fabri-Tac glue.. That stuff works awesome and you don't have any of the excess glue clumps like you do with Hot Glue..

Beautiful Hat by the way!!
