Description

The midnight pixie hat was created at midnight and was juts a fun project as I needed a hat for next day. Really easy to make and really fun to wear (sorry about some of the drawn images I forgot to take pictures.)

Instructions

  1. Small gedc0375 1296225335

Gather your materials The colour of the scarf doesn't really matter but do choose a contrasting wool it looks pretty Im guna keep the fringing on the scarf as it will make a nice edging, you can cutt i off or add a different border.

  2. Small second step 1296229135

This is the slightly more complex part. How work out how big your sections need to be... You'll need three sections, or however many it takes to get to the size you need. Measure your head my head is 57" Measure how wide your scarf is mine was 24.5" so ill need two sections measuring 24.5" and another section measuring 8" (see diagram for how to set it out)

  3. Small outline 1296226261

To get the hat shape fold your scarf in half then measure the centre on the fold. Go down to the edge where the fringing is and measure 12" up from the bottom. Mark where it is then connect the mark by the fold to the two marks 12" from the edge. This will form where your head goes.

  4. Small cutting copy 1296226608

Next fold it in half lengthways so its quartered now and cut down the line thatyou marked. Put the section that is cut off to one side as this makes your 3rd section

  5. Small gedc0382 1296226770

Now sew up one side of the folded section, i ended up with a loop at the folded end, im going to keep that in and use it later. Id advise not to use dk wool as i found it too thick to sew with but its all personal taste. You can use over hand stitch or running stitch or blanket stitch depending on how much time you have. I used overhand which is needle in at the bottom pull through the top move up the work about 1 cm then needle in at the bottom up through the top and carry on until your all sewn up 1 side.

  6. Small gedc0383 1296226883

Ta- Da all done, mines not that neat but it was about half 12, but spend as much or as little time on this as you want.

  7. Small 3rd section 1296227418

Now to shape the middle section. You want to get one of the off cuts (there should be 4) and measure to get the width you need (,mine as 8") trim it so its the right size then lay it beside the pieces you sewn up. Add the fringing edge if you kept it in

  8. Small gedc0393 1296227483

Now just sew up the edges, this is a great way of using up wool scraps... just dont use really thick wool or your thumb will be complaining at you in the morning (as i later found out)

  9. Small gedc0401 1296229112

And there ya go, a finished midnight Pixie hat I added a tassel to the end of mine but you could add pompoms, a bow or even some braided wool, if you cut up the other left over sections you could do all of the above with those.

  10. Small tassel 1296229455

This is how i did my tassel as i had a loop left at the point of my hat i shredded one of the left over triangles and cut them to relatively the same length. between 7 and 10 strands should make a nice full tassel depending on the thickness of your strips. Thread through the loop and fold in half, wrap round a scrap of wool quite tightly so that its hard to pull the strips of fleece through. The tie off around the top of the loop to make it extra secure There's your tassel and a finished Pixie hat
