My son asked me to knit him a pom-pom hat. I combined two different patterns and came up with this hat. This is my first attempt at colour knitting and its not hard at all! To finish it off, I used my new custom labels from the Dutch Label Shop on everything I made. Having your own custom labels looks great and it allows you to add a special touch to your handmade items!

Description

My son asked me to knit him a pom-pom hat. I combined two different patterns and came up with this hat. This is my first attempt at colour knitting and its not hard at all! To finish it off, I used my new custom labels from the Dutch Label Shop on everything I made. Having your own custom labels looks great and it allows you to add a special touch to your handmade items!

Instructions

  1. Read through the pattern first. Once you understand the pattern, you can adjust the stitches to any design you like! I like to knit in the round using circular needles, but you could use double points or even knit it on straight needles and sew it.

  2. Small 112869 2f2016 01 14 025341 ribbing

Cast on 96 stitches, place a marker and join in the round being careful not to twist your stitches. Start by knitting the brim using a 2 x 2 rib (knit 2, purl 2) which is a 4 stitch repeat for about 3 - 4 inches. (7-10 cm) Next, knit plain for 1-2 inches.(2.5 to 5 cm) The star pattern uses a 16 stitch repeat. That's where you get 96 stitches, (you will do the repeat 6 times). If you want to make it bigger, just add 16 more stitches.

  3. Small 112869 2f2016 01 14 025330 star%2bpattern

For the star, knit the first stitch in black, then knit a stitch with the white yarn leaving a tail about 2-3 inches (5 - 8 cm) long (to weave the end in later to secure it). Follow the pattern and carry the unused colour to the back. Try to keep the yarn from tangling together and unravel them often if it does tangle. You'll get the hang of it! Every time you finish a repeat, place a marker to keep your place. You should have 6 markers.

  4. Small 112869 2f2016 01 14 025419 reverse%2bside

When you finish the pattern, break the white yarn (leaving a tail) and remove your markers except the one at the beginning of the round. This picture is the inside of the hat. Continue to knit plain in black for about 1- 1 1/2 inches (2.5 - 4 cm). If you want your hat to be slouchy, knit about 3 inches (7.5 cm) Now we need to place 4 decrease markers around the hat. So 96 divided by 4 is 24. Knit 24 stitches, place a marker, 3 times. You should have 4 markers evenly placed around the hat.

  5. Small 112869 2f2016 01 14 204147 20160113 222745

From the first marker, K2tog (knit 2 st. together) then knit to 2 stitches before the next marker, SSK (Slip 2 stitches as if to knit one at a time, slip both stitches back to left needle, knit through back loops together), slip the marker and then K2tog. Repeat 2 more times, then knit to 2 stitches before beginning stitch marker and SSK (88 stitches; 8 stitches decreased per row). Knit the next row plain. Continue to decrease every other row until you have around 24 stitches. Cut your yarn leaving a long tail and thread the yarn on a tapestry needle. Pull the thread through all the remaining stitches, pull tight and weave your ends in to secure the top.

  6. Small 112869 2f2016 01 14 030151 20160113 220038

To make a pom pom, I just wound the yarn around my four fingers. I added a bit of white but I wanted it mostly black. Keep winding until it gets pretty full. Cut a length of yarn and tie it securely around the middle of the bunch. Snip both ends and start trimming it into a ball. Sew the pom pom on your hat!

Now the finishing touch! Thread a needle with black thread and sew your awesome personalized label into the inside of your new hat. I wanted it to show so I put it lower near the brim. Now wrap it up and give it to someone who is worthy of all your hard work!!
