recycle and save money by making your own
In Iceland the majority of people remove their shoes upon entering their home, business etc. I now do this myself and as it's summer it's too warm to wear socks in the house, so I made my own in-house flip flops.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 1
    Step 1

Take the cardboard backing from any A4 style notepad. Measure out your feet, the width of the pencil if enough of a distance to use.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 2
    Step 2

Cut out the shapes, it doesn't matter if they are not perfect. If you want you can make 2 sets for each flipper, to make them thicker. I didn't.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 3
    Step 3

Take your fabric you are using to line the flipper and measure out each individual piece, cut out and pin to the cardboard flipper.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 4
    Step 4

Sew the liner to the cardboard flipper, be careful as I broke my needle by moving the cardboard too much! doh

*If you have made 2 sets of cardboard for each flipper, you can glue the second cardboard piece to the first one after you have sewn the liner and band on

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 5
    Step 5

Measure the fabric you are going to use for the band across the top of your foot. I used doubled over felt.
Sew any edges of the band you need to before adding to flipper.

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 6
    Step 6

Attach the band to the flipper, I machine sewed it on.
You may want to try the band on your foot and then pin it in place, just to make sure you are giving yourself enough room.

*If you have made 2 sets of cardboard for each flipper, you can glue the second cardboard piece to the first one after you have sewn the liner and band on

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 7
    Step 7

Add any embellishments you like or leave it plain, whatever :D

  • How to make a sandal / flip flop. Make Your Own Flip Flops - Step 8
    Step 8

    Wear and enjoy.

If I was to make them again, I would avoid sweater fabric, it just stretched and moved all over the place when I was sewing it. Also I would go for adding the two layers of cardboard flippers :D

I like it! And I have 2 things that would make it even EASIER:
1)Whenever you trace the cardboard, its a lot easier and more exact if you use a SHOE and not just your feet
2)pin the fabric to the cardboard when you sew. It will make it so it wont move around and stuff

haha how would you explain that if she awoke! Tongue

You could take one of her smaller shoes, like a trainer and outline that, then make a smaller outline inside the lines a little?

Awesome! We have hardwood floors, like Cat, and I don't like wearing shoes or socks. I'm going to make a "glue" version of these Tongue

cool Happy I was going to add too that you could entirely make these with just glue instead of sewing. I just didn't, coz I didn't think of it then Happy

That is such a good idea, my feet get too hot in socks too but we have wood floors, so these would be really handy for me! Thanks for sharing Happy
