If you love knitting like we do, you probably have a whole pile of odds and ends kicking around in your stash that are too lovely to part with, but too small to make anything out of. Here's a way to make them into something fabulous! Our tutorial will show you how to make your own custom self-striping yarn and also how to make a perfectly matching mate for socks and mittens or whatever you like.

Instructions

  1. Small 113388 2f2016 02 12 224232 step1

Wind some yarn around your fingers. More winds = bigger stripes. Cut the yarn. Count the number of times you've wound the yarn and repeat for a second matching ball if you like.

  2. Small 113388 2f2016 02 12 224310 step2

Thread the end onto a darning needle, leaving a short tail. Sew the end into the yarn using short running stitches for about an inch. Pull the yarn end through, leaving a little loop at the end. Trim off the tag end, if there is one.

  3. Small 113388 2f2016 02 12 214710 step3

Wind off a new colour and cut. Thread the new colour onto a darning needle and pass the needle through the little loop at the end of the previous colour. Pull the yarn through the loop. Repeat for the twin magic ball.

  4. Small 113388 2f2016 02 12 224340 step4

Sew the new colour onto itself in the same way as the previous colour, taking care to stitch close to the loop.

  5. Small 113388 2f2016 02 12 214725 step5

Keep winding and adding colours. If you are making socks or mittens, you will want to have two matching balls weighing about 50g each. Start knitting or crocheting and watch the fun stripes happen!
