This macrame plant hanger is a great little project to introduce you to macrame! It uses 3 simple knots, making it perfect for beginners. To create your Macrame Plant Hanger, start by securing your wooden / metal ring to a clothes frame (or similar). You may like to either tie it on or use a ‘S’ hook. You may choose to work on a flat surface – however hanging is much easier to get consistent tension.

Instructions

  1. Small 2021 01 09 092040 gather%2bknot%2b1

Thread your 6 x 3m cords evenly through your ring so you have 12 strands to work with

  2. Small 2021 01 09 093851 wrap%2bknot%2bcollage%2b

Secure your cords in place with a wrap knot - take 1 x 40cm cord and create a loop at one end. - ensure you leave a tail of 5-10 cm poking up at the top. - place against your long cords and begin to wrap your long tail tightly around all cords (leaving the loop at the bottom and allowing the short tail to poke out the top of the wrap) - with the loose end - pass it through the loop at the bottom and pull it up into the wrap by the top tail - trim the loose ends and the cord should now be tightly held

  3. Small 2021 01 09 094631 hanger%2b1

Divide your long cords into 3 groups of 4 cords

  4. Small 2021 01 09 094819 plant%2bhanger%2b2

With your first set of 4 cords - Complete 15- 20 rounds of the spiral twist knot (instructions in step 5)

  5. Small 2021 01 09 100818 spiral%2bcollage

To complete a spiral knot - I'll demonstrate with the coloured cords. The left side cord (light green) being cord A and the right side cord (dark green) being cord D. The central cords (B&C) will stay straight and not move. - form a '4' with your cords by passing your left side cord (A) over the two central cords and under the right hand side cord (D) - pass the right cord (D) behind the central cords and through the gap (or corner) of cord A -hold the central cords straight and tighten the side cords - repeat these steps this time starting with cord D - continue to repeat always starting on the left side. As you repeat the cords will start to twist

  6. Small 2021 01 09 102309 plant%2bhanger%2b3

Thread a large hole bead onto all 4 cords. (if you have difficulty threading – try taping the base of your cords together with masking tape, and use a twisting motion as you push the cords) Switch your working cords so that the short cords are now in the middle, and you are now knotting with the longer cords Knot another 15 rounds of the Spiral Twist (ensuring the twist is still heading in the same direction)

  7. Small 2021 01 09 102558 plant%2bhanger%2b4

Repeat the above steps with your remaining groups of cords

  8. Small 2021 01 09 102910 plant%2bhanger%2b5

Take 2 of your 3 knotted stands and hold all 8 loose cords flat in your hand Take the 2 right cords from one and the 2 left cords from the other This will give you the 4 cords needed to work with now.

  9. Small 2021 01 09 104156 square%2bknot%2bcollage

Using these 4 cords, create a square knot about 15-20cm from the base of your spiral knots. To create the square knot I will show you using the coloured cords. The Light green is A and the dark green is D The two central cords (B&C) will stay straight - Take Cord A placing it over your inner cords and under Cord D (making the shape of a 4) - Cord D now goes behind the inner cords and up through the bend created by Cord A (same as we did for the spiral) - We now do it back again, by bringing Cord A back over the inners and under Cord D - Cord D passes back behind the inners and back through the loop created by A This will create a square knot

  10. Small 2021 01 09 104900 plant%2bhanger%2b6

Repeat step 8 with the remaining cords - to join them all together With your plant pot – check the placement of these square knots. They should be paced about the middle of your pot. You may need to undo and re-position the square knots, if they are too high or too low. If your pot is large, you may need to create a second row of square knots (with a small gap between) to prevent your pot falling out.

  11. Small 2021 01 09 105231 plant%2bhanger%2b7

Take note of where you need to gather your cords, so they sit under your plant pot. – Remove your plant pot, and gather up all the cords in the desired position. - Use the remaining 40cm cord to tie a wrap knot to secure the base

  12. Small 2021 01 09 105441 plant%2bhanger%2b8

Trim your tails to finish off your hanger

Your hanger is now complete! Thanks for crafting along with The Little Craft House!
