With the holidays fast approaching, I wanted to create something you could decorate your home with. It didn’t take long for me to realize that stars are perfect because they are universally appealing regardless of what holiday you celebrate, and if made small enough, one could easily knit 1-2 (or more!) of them in an evening. I made this sweet little garland using each of the yarns from our Luxury Fiber Sampler but it’s also great for using up scraps of yarn. Each star uses 15-20 yards of a Fingering, Sport, or DK weight yarn knit on US 2.5 needles (or whatever size you need to get gauge.) The stars are the perfect as ornaments, garlands, coasters, or any other use you can think of! These are surprisingly fun to knit with simple short row shaping (wrap and turns), and it’s even more fun when you get to knit with a variety of different fibers! The garland is created by connecting all of the stars together with a single crochet chain and I used decorative buttons to create loops for hanging on hooks, although it’s not necessary. Finished Measurements: Approximately 4.5” in diameter *Please Note: If you use a variety of yarn weights ranging from Fingering to DK, you may find that your stars are slightly different sizes. They will still be somewhere in the 4-5” range which is fine. If you are getting stars larger or smaller than this, you might consider adjusting your needle size to achieve slightly more uniform sizes. Instructions (Make 12 stars): Cast on 8 stitches. Set up Row: Knit *These stars are each made up of 6 wedges, all exactly the same. The edges are then sewn together and cinched through the middle to complete the star.
Wedge Pattern: Row 1 and all odd rows through 13: K to last 2 sts, yo, k2 Row 2: K to last st, w & t. Row 4: K to last 1 st before the last wrap, w & t. Rows 6, 8, 10, 12, & 14: Same as Row 4 Row 15: Knit Row 16: BO 7 sts, knit to end of round picking up wraps and knitting them with the wrapped stitch. (8 sts remain) *Repeat Rows 1-16 five more times. BO all sts. Sew sides together using a darning needle and run needle and yarn through sts along the center of the the star a few times, pull tight and weave in all ends. Lightly steam block. *If you’ve never done wrap & turn short rows before, I highly recommend watching a video on you tube to have a visual. A Google search brought up several video options for both the wrap and turn technique as well as picking up the wraps and knitting them. Also, knittinghelp.com is a great resource and has videos as well.
Stringing the Garland: With linen blend yarn and crochet hook, crochet a 12" chain. Single crochet into the point of one of the first star to attach it to the chain. Continue crocheting the chain about 2” until the chain meets the 2nd point on the star. Single crochet into the second point to attach it to the chain. Continue making a crochet chain and attaching stars in this manner every 8-10" until all 12 stars are attached. Crochet 12" of chain on the end and tie off. Use remaining yarn to make fringe or tassels and attach to each end of the chain. Enjoy decorating your home for the holidays with your brand new beautiful garland!
