I made this out of some old t-shirts as a Valentines Day present. I don't want to give it away though because I love it so much. Also, USE A SEWING MACHINE!! Mine is broken and I had to hand sew everything, which sucked. This project is easy but definitely time-consuming. However, it's totally worth the effort.

Description

I made this out of some old t-shirts as a Valentines Day present. I don't want to give it away though because I love it so much. Also, USE A SEWING MACHINE!! Mine is broken and I had to hand sew everything, which sucked. This project is easy but definitely time-consuming. However, it's totally worth the effort.

Instructions

  1. First you'll need to take your first shirt (I used a grayish-blue one of my dad's) and cut out the pieces. Make sure the shirt lies flat so that you cut 2 of each. Head: Front and Back, cut a rectangle of about 3x4 inches. (Of course you'll have 2 squares from the 2 layers). Sides, cut trapezoid of about 2 inches on the bottom and 1.5 inches on top and 3 inches long. Top and Bottom, cut a rectangle of about 4x1.5 inches. Body: Cut a trapezoid for the front and back, 12 inches long, 6 on the bottom and 4 on top. Sides, cut a 12x4 inch rectangle. Top and Bottom, cut a 4 by 6 inch rectangle. Face/Heart: Using felt, cut 2 small hearts for eyes and a mouth shape. Cut a big heart from the shiny material and any buttons, dials, rivets, switches, etc. you want your robot to have. Attach these to the appropriate pieces. Arms/Claws: Cut out a claw shape like in the picture. Legs: Cut a 2x5 inch rectangle (the legs are tube shapes). Wheels/Feet: Cut 2 circles out of your alternate color shirt of about a 2 inch diameter (unless you want them bigger or smaller).

  2. After stitching the face and heart to the head and body pieces, it's time to make the head and body. These are done the same way. Attach a front/back piece to a side piece and attach the two to a top/bottom piece. Then do this with the remaining pieces, and you'll have 2 halves. Attach these to form a cubic shape and leave a hole somewhere to turn and stuff. Stuff with poly-fill or cotton until it's firm but not bursting at the seams (chubby and huggable). Sew the head and body together, with the face parallel to the front of the body so that there's a ledge on the back of the robot. Go over the seams a couple times to ensure that it's tight and secure.

  3. Ahh! The hard part is over!!! Take your claws and sew them around the edge. Turn and stuff. Attach them to the sides of the body (hand sew).

  4. Take the leg pieces and fold each into a tube/sausage shape. Sew edge. Take wheel pieces and sew around edge, leaving a 1-inch gap. Using the gap, attach the legs to the wheels. Turn and stuff. Attach the legs to the bottom of the body by hand-sewing like with the claws.

  5. The finishing touches! Take the two buttons, preferably large, round ones and stitch to the sides of the head for ears. For the feet, paint on a big circle around the edge on the front. Paint a smaller circle inside. Add "shine" lines in each to look like spinning wheels. Paint the back of the feet the same as the front. Let them dry.

  6. Extra ideas: Make an envelope out of felt and attach to the back as a secret compartment. Fill it with candy or a letter or something like that. Put a flower or box of chocolate in its claw and give it to someone. Spray it with perfume. Whatever you wanna do. Happy Valentines Day!!
