About

I was extra bored and thought I'd spend some time creating a gift I could give to someone. I saw a boring old pen lying around so I thought I'd give it a go at making it look pretty and unique. At first I was thinking valentines day present but this idea kinda evolved onto Queen of hearts. This is possibly because I remembered when Alice In Wonderland came out and everyone was obsessed by it! For this project I didn't buy anything I used old bits lying around from previous art projects.
Feel free to attempt this project yourself. You can copy my design or create your own with small pieces you find. (A great way to use up all the little pieces that can't be used on bigger projects).

You Will Need (8 things)

  • 10 in Ribbon
  • Ribbon
  • Foam
  • Felt
  • 1 Bead(s)
  • Necklace
  • 1 Pen(s)
  • Glue Gun

Steps (10 steps, 25 minutes)

  1. 1

-Take your pen and some red felt/foam. Cut out a thick rectangle (this will be wrapped about 1.5cms from the tip of the pen to allow room for you fingers to hold the pen) Don't glue the thick rectangle on yet!
-cut 3 or 4 thin strips of red felt/foam. (Remember to leave 1.5cms from the tip of the pen)

  2. 2

-Gluegun the 3 or 4 strips vertically down the pen leaving a chosen amount of space inbetween each.
*For best results try and keep the spacing even.

  3. 3

-Use small strips of ribbon in the gaps between the red felt/foam. Gluegun these down twisting or bunching up the ribbon as the glue sets.
*Make sure you have 2cm extra ribbon than you need to cover the gaps.

  4. 4

-Wrap the extra ribbon around the top section, again twisting and bunching.

  5. 5

-Use an old necklace or cheap belt from things such as school trousers. Use scissors to carefully and slowly open out one of the little metal sections (Place the tip of the scissors into the metal loop, push slowly holding the other parts of the necklace/belt. This should slowly open out the metal loop enabling you to pull out the section you want)
-Remove the section you want from the rest of the chain. In the picture I have removed the chain link section.

  6. 6

-Measure from the end of the pen (not the tip) how far you wish for your chain to dangle and once again remove the section of chain you wish to use.

*On mine I have one slightly shorter than the other.

-Cut out two little red felt/foam hearts and gluegun them to the end.

  7. 7

-Gluegun the part of the chain which doesn't have the heart attached to the end of the pen firmly.

  8. 8

-Gluegun another strip of ribbon to the end of the pen to cover up the top of the metal chains, remember to bunch and fold it up and keep gluing all the little parts down until it looks perfect.
(Adding the extra ribbon on the top will also hold extra support to the chain making it less likely to fall off)

-Take the bead and gluegun it to the end of the pen.

  9. 9

-The end product should look like this.

    Extra info:
For my ribbon and bead I used the little decorations from christmas crackers!

  10. 10

-Another angle of the pen with the chain wrapped around!
