Instructions

  1. Small dsc00704 1319569462

Cut a square of Buckrum as shown. Cover a polystyrene wig head with cling film to protect it. Wet the Buckrum. I always have a basin of water and a towel handy as the Buckrum becomes really sticky.

  2. Small dsc00708 1319571280

Stretch the Buckrum over the head again using the cross grain of the fabric to help curve over the head. Be firm with the Buckrum smoothing out any tucks. Pin the fabric in place and leave to dry.

  3. Small dsc00752 1319568650

Draw a simple shape onto the Buckrum bearing in mind that you will be wiring and covering this shape with fabric.

  4. Small dsc00756 1319568697

Cut out the shape and if happy with it, sew wire along the top edge using blanket stitch.

  5. Small dsc00757 1319568386

Again make sure that the ends of the wire over lap to keep the shape firm.

  6. Small dsc00758 1319569552

Cover the shape with a thin stretchy material such as t-shirt fabric. Be careful not to sew on too tightly. Trim any excess fabric on the underside.

  7. Small dsc00762 1319571234

Now do the same with a fabric of your choice. I have chosen a blue black silk velvet. Use a stitch which is only visible on the underside. Again trim any excess fabric.

  8. Small dsc00764 1319600499

Decoration I have chosen to cover the edge with a beaded trim which you can sew or glue along the edge. Sewing is better!

  9. Small dsc00765 1319600696

I have then taken a black velvet ribbon and cut five pieces the same size and shape.

  10. Small dsc00767 1319601984

Gather these at the edge with a running stitch.

  11. Small dsc00768 1319600921

I have then sewn these through the hat. To add a little height you could use sinamay as before or feathers if you like.

  12. Small dsc00769 1319602170

I have chosen to gather a small piece of lace edging and finished of the decoration with a red spider brooch.

  13. Small dsc00800 1319571310

To finish off: carefully glue around the underside of the hat and place lining fabric over and smooth down well.

  14. Small dsc00801 1319600310

Trim back the extra lining fabric and create and easy but tidy finish by glueing some looper or gimp braid along the raw edge.
