Instructions

  1. A common ingredient for DIY lip balm is petroleum jelly (or Vaseline). Although this is good for temporary pain relief from lip infections, I do not recommend it for prolonged use, nor for casual use. Petroleum jelly is pretty much jellied oil. Too much use of oil on the skin can actually have an adverse effect and start drying the skin out.

  2. DO NOT USE A MICROWAVE!!! Especially if you decide to use petroleum jelly! From personal experience, a microwave is a dangerous method for lip balm, particularly with vaseline. When I first started making some, I would put the jelly in a microwave safe bowl and pop it in for 1 minute. Even in such a short time, the bowl would get incredibly hot, while the jelly would not even be warm all the way through. The bowl would begin to burn and the jelly would make loud crackling and popping sounds. This is dangerous and I do not advise it!

  3. USE A DOUBLE BOILER! Should you choose to use beeswax, Vaseline, or anything else, this is the safest method I know of. It heats the product throughly without damaging your dishes, and is a lot safer to handle. If you DO NOT have a double boiler, I will show you how to improvise one!

  4. The Makeshift Double Boiler: This is a very simple thing to do. Find a small saucepan and a ceramic coffee mug that is slightly taller then the pan. Fill the small saucepan about halfway with water. Set on stove and turn to "HIGH."

Place the coffee mug in the water while it is warming up. Scoop your beeswax, petroleum jelly, etc. into the mug. The heat from the hot water will start to melt whatever is in the mug as the water gets hotter!

Add in various oils, scents and flavors while your jelly/wax is warm. Almond oil Vitamin E oil Olive oil are all good choices for lips and skin! Do some research and find what you like!

  7. Cocoa butter Shea butter Beeswax are good choices for a smoother consistency in your end product.

To add flavor to your lip balm, you can use essential oils, or, what I like, is flavoring oils. Flavor oils don't always blend well into the waxes and such, but it does make a great smell!!!
