Lightbulb Vase

It seems to me like it'd be a little too fragile for paintbrushes and stuff...
Actually... It seems to me like this'd be a bit too fragile to even live in the same house as me...

I love this project. I want to hang them all over my apartment, but I've tried one and I broke it trying to remove the black piece of glass. I'm clumsy and tend to break whatever I touch, so this wasn't a big surprise for me. (No cuts, I had my gear on!) Is there a trick to removing that piece? I have another couple of light bulbs and was wondering if you had some pointers for that step.

I tried doing this and when I was cleaning out the white powdery stuff I dropped it in the sink
