Instructions

Collect the bits for your project: 1) SOFT LEATHER STRIP - I got a scrap for 30 pence at a charity shop! Ask if they have any unsellable leather items, you might get lucky! 2) LACE EDGING STRIP - Find a piece that has a suitable width (mine is 3") 3) THICK ELASTIC. I used white (all that i had handy!), but think it may be better to have used brown/black. 4) SEWING NEEDLE & THREAD to match colour of lace. 5) SCISSORS

MEASURE & CUT Being the lazy bum I am, I didnt use a measuring tape, but you can if you prefer. 1) Take your lace and measure around your head, where you want the headband to sit. Add 1.5" and cut piece. 2)Take the leather. This time measure around your head leaving a gap for the elastic. Or you could subtract about 4" from your head measurement. Mark or snip the length on the leather scrap. 3) Lay the lace over the leather. I used the lace as a guide to cut the leather strip. You can of course be more precise, but for speed, this worked well. You should now have one strip of lace and a shorter strip of leather, both of equal width, or thereabouts.

SEW TOGETHER 1) Find the middle of both pieces, and pin or sew to hold it. (with the suede/back facing, you should be able to see equal amounts of lace on either side of leather). 2) Sew pieces together, hiding the stitching in the lace. For speed I only stitched along the top edge and sides, it seems secure enough with that. 3) You should now have one strip. Measure this against your head, checking lace pieces overlap.

ELASTIC 1) With the back of the strip facing you, sew the elastic to one end of the leather. Hide the stitches in the lace. 2) Once elastic is sewn on, place the strip around your head again. Here comes the tricky part..... 3) With elastic stretched find the point (on the elastic) it needs to be stitched at the other side. Dont over stretch the elastic, it still needs some give to get over your head. But needs to stretch just enough that it stays in place when worn. 4) Mark the point you just found and sew to the other side of leather (as shown in picture)

All that is left is for the ends of the lace to be sewn together. 1) Slip headband on to the widest part of your head. Overlap the lace and pin in place. 2) Sew sides of lace together. This picture shows the elastic unstretched with the sides of the lace sewn up. I might sew the middle of the baggy looking lace to the centre line of the elastic.... Just so it looks better.
