[hahaha first real how-to =) because today i had to make a gift really quick] i just realized that tomorrow is the last day of school for my kid [i'm famous for my aloofness], and i wanted to thank his teacher [The Incredible Ms. Tricia] with a special something for all the support that she showed Erik during this year. My Erik is a squirrel on speed; i was getting letters from school office full of worries for possible ADD, and how he might need to repeat the year, but...when they had the evaluation tests last week - He got the AWARD for the best student in the whole Year1. Sorry, i just had to share it =) So, back to Teacher Tricia. She loves diving and cats, and i always make thoughtful presents. Of course, the fact that i used rosewood brings a certain glamour, but believe me, if you use your kid's old woodblocks, it will still look great [i think o_O]. <3 thank you for your attention!

Instructions

  1. Small 1 1274957482

Gather your supplies, that's obvious for step one =) for some bizarre reason the "you will need" list keeps metamorphosing and missing "ingredients", so i will write it here as well: you will need: a shell a wooden block a stick soil and plant a drill glue [i used hot glue] i used a bamboo stick, cos it grows in my garden, but anything will do, really.

  2. Small 2 1274958070

drill it, baby. tip: this piece of wood was the heaviest, therefore more stable. i drilled a bit off center, you can't really see it, but it helps to give better support for the shell filled with soil [heavy and with a weird "balancing point"]

  3. Small 3 1274958373

put a dab of hot glue on the tip of the stick and insert it carefully in the drilled hole. tip: if you wait a bit with the glue on the stick before inserting it, letting glue to hang down like a slim drop [yay to gravity!], it'd be more stable and have a "flawless" finish.

  4. Small 4 1274959063

Glue the shell to the stick. Fill with soil. Add a plant and some tiny stones from the sea. I drilled the shell as well, glued inside and outside on the stick; hot glued some cone shells under the big shell and put a little coral on the wooden block, without fixing it, cos it sort of hugs the bamboo stick by itself =)

  5. Small 5 1274959365

i drew a tiny cat silhouette on a heart-shaped leaf [yes, man-made. me-made heart leaves]. sorry for unclear picture, but the drawing is incredibly subtle and the leaf is small. i used a #000000 brush [it's practically one hair hahaha] and black acrylic paint. it won't harm the plant, believe me. tip: if you know how this plant is called [i don't], get one, push a bit [with your nail] at the tip of a new baby leaf [the tiny bright light green ones] and you will grow hearts too!
