Make sure you are using a natural fiber yarn, wool works best. You can leave it in a hank, or you can wind it into a ball on a ball winder to make a gradient skein.
Use heat resistant glass jars, add at least 2 packets of Kool Aid to each one in the color you desire, then add boiling water.
For a gradient skein, pull the center out of the ball a few times and keep connected, place each section in each jar of Kool-Aid. Be careful, it's hot!
When the water is mostly clear and the yarn has absorbed the color, remove from the jars, squeeze out and let dry.
Rewind your ball when dry and knit!
