Cut Out + Keep

Kitty Couch

A warm and comfy place in your window sill for the kitties

Our cats like to lie in our windowsill and to make them more comfortable I made a small couch for them from some foam and (ugly, no good for anything, but furry) fabric that I had lying around. The most expensive supply was the glue I used (bisontix), but that was lying around too so I didn't have to buy it for this project. A cheap way to get furniture foam is to roam the streets in spring when people put their old couches on the street. You can also get leather this way, if the couch still looks good enough. Old mattresses will do too.

Description

Our cats like to lie in our windowsill and to make them more comfortable I made a small couch for them from some foam and (ugly, no good for anything, but furry) fabric that I had lying around. The most expensive supply was the glue I used (bisontix), but that was lying around too so I didn't have to buy it for this project. A cheap way to get furniture foam is to roam the streets in spring when people put their old couches on the street. You can also get leather this way, if the couch still looks good enough. Instructions

  1. Think out a design for the kitty couch. I made it with a vertical back because our window is a bit drafty and this would shield the kitties from the air flow.

  2. Cut out the foam into the pieces you need. In my case the back consists of two parts because the foam pieces I still had were smaller than I wanted the couch.

  3. Glue the foam together into the shape you want. Use a very strong glue for this.

  4. Drape your fabric (perhaps cut it first) over the couch in such a way that it is completely covered. You could also sew pieces together of course. Then bit by bit glue (or sew, if you're very patient) the fabric onto the foam. The under side doesn't have to be covered. I didn't have enough fabric for that.

  5. Let it dry thoroughly and air it so the kitties won't die of the glue-stench. Put in the windowsill (or any other place your cat likes to sit) and watch your kitties enjoy it.
