Hi all This is my 1st how to here.So bare with me as I fig this all out. So I came across this site the other day while surfing the net and seen they were having a contest I thought how cool... Then this idea popped into my head and now I have an entry for the contest and these great retro earrings to boot. I hope you enjoy making them as much as I did. I love to create with found objects and try to recycle stuff anyway I can. These earrings are a great way to recycle that old scratched up CD you have laying around. I have also noticed that even though you can move the eyes to how you want them. If you leave them in the center as u wear them when they move it looks as if the eyes are moving when they are not. Its a cool effect!!!

Instructions

  1. Small 1 remove foil

First you have to remove the label off of the CD. To do this use the scissors to make a straight scratch from the outer edge to the inner circle. cut off a few inches of packing tape and place it on the top of the CD across the scratch leaving some hanging over the edge. press the tape down good the grab the part hanging off and rip it off. this will remove the foil. Continue doing this till all the foil is removed.

  2. Small 2 draw image

Sketch out a cat base form for your clock this 1 was a bit to big so I Drew another one and added an spot where the clock would go

  3. Small 3 draw section for the clock

Using the marker trace over your cat base and center oval. Make 2 Using a reg scissors (one you wont mind dulling) Cut out the cat base(CD's are made of a thick plastic but cut easily with a scissors) also cut out 2 free form tails

  4. Small 4 cut out center

Using the Dremel remove the center section. also drill a hole in the top center between the ears so you can attach your ear wires later.

  5. Small 5 sand make eyes n tummy

Use the Dremel to make 2 holes where the eyes will be Use the Dremel to scuff up the plastic so the paint sticks better.

  6. Small 6 make eyes and tummy

Use the polymer clay to make 4 small balls that will fit into the eye holes you made. Cut 4 small pieces of wire and place 1 ball on each wire. The wire should be placed off center like where the red dot is in the lack square. So that the eyes will stick out. Use the polymer clay to make the center clock part. By using your cat base and press it down over some flattened out clay to get the perfect shape.

  7. Small 7 add wires

Make a 2 small loops out of wire and add 1 to the top of each of your clock parts.

  8. Small 8 create bow2

Roll out 4 small clay balls and turn them into teardrop shapes. Place 2 of them together so they overlap at the tips. To create a bow shape. Use the pin to create detail on your bow press down and draw in the clay. Example the bow in the black box. bake all of your polymer clay parts.

  9. Small 9 create chain

Use wire to create a small chain do not close last link.

  10. Small 10 add chain to tummy

once all the clay parts have been cooked attach the chain to the loop at the top of your clock part

  11. Small 11 paint white

Paint all of your clay parts white.

  12. Small 12 paint black

Paint 3 coats of black on the cat bases and tails.

  13. Small 13 put pieces in place

Time to put it all together. When you place the eyes in make sure the smaller part is in the back. Also check to make sure your eyes can move on the wire then glue down the wires at the top and bottom. Glue your clock part into place making sure the wire is on the top. Bend the top wire down so you can glue the tail to it. This will make it so your tail can move.

  14. Small 15 add bow

Paint on the details of your mouth , clock face and eyes. once dry add a few coats of gloss. Be careful not to gloss your eyes to where they cant move.

  15. Small 16 cut felt add hooks

Add jump ring to top center hole. Add ear wire to jump ring. Now lets cover up that mess back there. Cut 2 small rectangles of felt to cover the tails and cut 2 larger rectangles to cover the cat base. On the cat base make sure not to glue any of the moving parts and to leave the bottom open so your tail can move.

  16. Small 17 add felt

trim off all of the excess felt and you are done :)
