Last Year's Halloween Costumes
Last year we went as Kate and Leo, two Edward Gorey characters from the Gashlycrumb Tinies. The hardest part of these costumes was making my ax stand out at the right angle.

The clothes are all second hand. I had to modify the trousers into Edwardian "short pants" to fit the picture.

The ax is made of cardboard and masking tape. I painted it with black and grey tempera, then used gesso and the end of a paintbrush to make the white lines on the handle. After making the ax, I split the top corner into two flaps and sewed it into the sash, which is attached in back by velcro (took a while to make it the right fit).

I don't have a good close up of "Leo's" neck, but I stuck tacks in liquid latex and let it all dry. Once it was dry I attached the concoction with spirit gum and applied some dark red (almost black) blood for gory effect than the original Gorey inspiration.

Wish I'd taken more pics so I could do a full tutorial, but that's what I've got.

Thanks for looking!
